MU are looking for a replacement for Amorim after the manager made shocking statements. |
The decision was made on January 5th and took effect immediately. Accordingly, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach was informed of the decision after the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on January 4th, his final match as head coach.
The main reason for the dismissal was a breakdown in internal relations, particularly following Amorim's public criticism of the club's leadership. In the post-Leeds press conference, Amorim emphasized that he came to Old Trafford to be a "manager," not a "head coach," and implicitly criticized football director Jason Wilcox and the scouting department for their lack of support in the transfer market.
He also stated that he would fulfill his contract for the remaining 18 months and then "everyone will move on." Amorim was appointed in November 2024 from Sporting CP, replacing Erik ten Hag. In his 14 months in charge, he led the team in 63 matches, winning 24, drawing, and losing a total of 39.
Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League after 20 rounds, but are only a few points above the relegation zone and have won only one of their last five matches. Darren Fletcher, a former legendary midfielder for the club and now the head coach of the U18 team, is expected to take on the interim role.
Fletcher previously served as a first-team assistant under Amorim and has coaching experience since 2020. The decision was approved by senior leadership, including CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Previously, despite tensions over the January transfer window and the 3-4-3 formation, the club's leadership had expressed patience with Amorim. However, his statements over the weekend became the final straw. Manchester United is in a period of instability, with the head coach position becoming precarious after just over a year.
The club has not yet announced its plans for a long-term manager, but Darren Fletcher will lead the team in upcoming matches.
