Arsenal's 4-0 victory over Ipswich in the simultaneous match officially secured Manchester United's survival in the Premier League. For many fans, this was more embarrassing than something to celebrate, as it demonstrated the unprecedented decline of the team that had won the English league title 20 times.
With 15 defeats in the Premier League this season, Manchester United have reached their worst losing streak since the 1989/90 season – a season in which they finished 13th and were only saved by winning the FA Cup.
MEN journalist Samuel Luckhurst wrote sarcastically: "The good news for Manchester United is they've officially secured their Premier League survival. The bad news? Manchester United have just lost 15 Premier League games, the most in a single season since 1989/90."
In reality, not many fans care anymore about where MU finishes the season in the bottom half of the table. All hopes now rest on the Europa League. This is the last lifeline that could bring them back to the Champions League next season.
On April 18th, MU staged a classic comeback against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals, rekindling hopes of a happy ending to a chaotic season. However, those hopes were quickly dashed. At Old Trafford, the "Red Devils" played poorly and lost 0-1 to Wolves.
MU scored five goals against Lyon, including three in a six-minute extra-time burst. But when they played in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim's team reverted to their familiar style: controlling possession, creating chances, and then squandering them all.
