Overcoming oneself

At 5 a.m., when the signal whistle sounded, young soldier Bui Tuan Anh (13 years old, residential area No. 5, Yen Lac town, Na Ri district), a member of squad 04, immediately jumped up, neatly folded his blankets and sheets, took care of his personal hygiene, and then went out to the field to exercise with his comrades.

In the military environment, every activity is structured and highly disciplined. With two years of experience participating in the "Semester in the Military" program, Tuan Anh has become a role model of self-discipline and exemplary conduct. Tuan Anh enjoys the unarmed combat training, field marches, and the unit's history lessons.

“What impressed me most was learning about the Hoang Cam field stove, a unique type of field stove used by our soldiers during the resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism. While participating in the program, I always tried to abide by the regulations so as not to affect my squad. The program helped me understand the training environment of the soldiers, which further increased my love for my homeland and my pride in the traditions of the Vietnam People's Army,” Tuan Anh said.

Unlike Tuan Anh, soldier Cao Trung Quan (8 years old, Duc Xuan ward, Bac Kan city) was somewhat bewildered as it was his first time away from home experiencing life in the military. Accustomed to being cared for by his parents, Trung Quan had to become independent in even the smallest tasks like washing clothes, folding blankets, and washing dishes after "enlisting."

The children were instructed to fold blankets and sheets in the military style.

With guidance and encouragement from his teammates, Trung Quân gradually adapted and successfully completed the tasks assigned by the organizers.

“This is the first time I’ve been away from my parents for so long. Before, my parents helped with laundry and dishwashing, but now I can do it myself. The members of the squad come from many different places, but when we live and study together, everyone is very united and helps each other. The program has helped me make many new friends,” Trung Quân said.

When asked about her feelings about participating in the program, "young soldier" Luong Ngoc Hoa confided: "This is the first time I've been introduced to the military environment, and I've had the opportunity to test myself by overcoming difficulties and challenges that I've never had to face at home."

Nurture the good things.

It is evident that as material and spiritual living standards improve, parents all wish to provide their children with the best. However, this very love and care from parents can lead many children to become dependent, indifferent, and uncaring towards others, lacking life skills and easily discouraged by difficulties.

"The 'Semester in the Military' program created a new environment, allowing students to initially experience the hardships of life, rekindling the flame of love and deep care among family members, which is often obscured by the worries of everyday life."

Ms. Hoang Hai Ha, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, said: "The 'Semester in the Army' program focuses on helping students form good habits and abandon bad ones; learn to love and cherish beautiful feelings for their grandparents, parents, friends, and everyone around them; share with those in unfortunate circumstances; practice social skills, communication and behavior, and learn how to cope with and equip themselves with skills to handle situations in difficult conditions..."

"From those initial inspirations, when they return to their daily lives, the children themselves, along with their families, schools, and surrounding environment, will help them continue to improve upon those positive qualities," Ms. Ha confidently stated.

Tears were shed as the soldiers wrote letters home to their parents.

This is clearly demonstrated through each diary entry and each letter the children wrote to their families. Even though the letters were innocent, such as: "I love my grandparents and mom very much," or "I can wash my own clothes now," "I know how to fold blankets and clothes properly like the soldiers of Uncle Ho...", many parents were very happy after the training course.

Young soldiers visited and presented gifts to families receiving preferential treatment in Bac Kan city.

Many parents have gained a better understanding of their children, and the children have also deeply appreciated the value of the family home they have. Ms. Bui Thi Hue, parent of Bui Tuan Anh, shared that although the program was very short, it has made significant progress for her son, teaching him to care for his grandparents, help his mother with housework, take care of himself, wake up early, and neatly arrange his bedding.
