The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recorded many bizarre violations, but the recent incident during a baggage search at Los Angeles International Airport (California) completely exceeded their expectations.
The number of illegal items found inside the carry-on luggage of the female passenger who violated the law.
The incident occurred on December 15th when security personnel discovered suspicious items in a female passenger's carry-on luggage as it passed through a scanner at Terminal 4 of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
During the search, they found 82 firecrackers, 3 knives, 2 weapon models, and a can of pepper spray in the carry-on luggage for a flight from LAX to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
"The number of prohibited items detected in a single security scan is truly alarming," CNN quoted Jason Pantages, Director of the TSA at LAX, as saying at a press conference on December 23. According to him, this incident serves as a reminder for all passengers to double-check their belongings before arriving at the airport.
According to the TSA, the fireworks discovered were those sold on the consumer market, and therefore had less explosive power than those used in demonstrations. Even so, explosives like fireworks are prohibited in airline baggage, whether checked or carry-on. Knives, weapon models, and small cans of pepper spray are permitted as checked baggage on domestic flights within the U.S.
The female passenger was questioned by police, while the airport's bomb disposal team confiscated prohibited items.
The TSA reported that 2.6 million passengers went through security checkpoints across the United States on December 15th, up from 2.5 million on the same day last year.
