This award is held every 5 years by the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) to consider and award prizes for the creation and promotion of literary, artistic and journalistic works. In this award, the Organizing Committee received nearly 3,500 works in 8 fields: Culture, music, dance, theater, cinema, fine arts, photography, journalism from all over the country for consideration.
According to Lieutenant General Truong Thien To, Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army, Head of the Award Steering Committee, behind each stage light, hidden in each page, each film, each frame are the worries, sweat, efforts, the journeys regardless of danger and hardship with the warm hearts, creative thinking of the artists, always eager to contribute to building a strong army in terms of politics and ideology. Among the 208 excellent works awarded by the Ministry of National Defense , artist Nguyen Ngan and artist Do Kich of the Ha Nam Literature and Arts Association won 01 A prize and 01 B prize for Fine Arts works on the theme of the Armed Forces and Military History.
As for Do Kich, he likes the theme of revolutionary war, because Do Kich was a soldier during the years of fighting against the US, went to the battlefield, and lived in the atmosphere of a fierce and arduous war. After the war, artist Do Kich still felt a pang of sadness for his comrades, for the old battlefield, for the years of his youth. 6 years in the army (from 1970 to 1976), the fighting life gave him a true view of war, of the love between the army and the people, of comradeship, of the sacrifice of those in the rear... That is why, in thousands of paintings by Do Kich, he devoted a whole part to the theme of revolutionary war. The images of Uncle Ho's soldiers in the resistance war were beautiful in a simple and pure ideal way; the images of kind mothers and wives in the rear, sacrificing for the front line were also expressed in a noble and emotional way...
Artist Do Kich said that real life gave him a true and emotional perspective. Only by going through war did he fully understand the loss and sacrifice of his compatriots, comrades, and nation, and that gave him endless inspiration for the theme of revolutionary war. Sending a look at reality in his work, sending his own thoughts when in life people cannot always express themselves through normal communication. War makes those who go through it feel proud, glorious and braver... " Hanoi 12 Days and Nights" (Army Award 2002), "Fight to the End" (Bronze Medal of the National Fine Arts Exhibition 2003), "Sharing the Dien Bien Trenches of the Past" (Vietnam Fine Arts Association Award 2004), "Marching Night" (Bronze Medal of the National Fine Arts Exhibition 2005), "Road to the Campaign" (Bottom Prize of the Ministry of National Defense's Award for Composing and Promoting Literary, Artistic and Journalistic Works on the Theme of Armed Forces and Military Strategy in the 2020-2025 Period)... are works that mark Do Kich's quite successful creative journey in this topic area.
For the first time, his work won an award, and the highest award at the prestigious Award for Literature and Arts, artist Nguyen Ngan said, “On the training ground” is a woodcut depicting the training and combat training of officers and soldiers of the Vietnam People’s Army. The special point of this work is that Nguyen Ngan has created a training scene of the air force with modern technical means, in fast-paced situations, requiring officers and soldiers to operate very skillfully, accurately, and with high concentration. With delicate lines and skillful carving techniques, Nguyen Ngan has created a vivid picture with intentional dark and light areas, shallow and deep carvings. The composition of the painting is expressed quite tightly, creating a special impression and emotion when showing viewers the atmosphere and space of activities on the training ground.
Artist Nguyen Ngan shared: “I draw woodcuts and am passionate about this creativity, but I am very limited in drawing on the subject of military and military affairs. I used to think that there was a barrier in my own thinking. Firstly, inspiration is not as abundant as other subjects. Secondly, without reality, relying only on documents and visualization makes it difficult to fully express the inner thoughts of the problem. Thirdly, I used to struggle to find a place to look at war - something I have not yet immersed myself in, so I had difficulty expressing”. Then, the reality of life and emotional experiences gave Nguyen Ngan a beautiful idea about soldiers. “On the training ground” was born like that. Now, looking at his work, artist Nguyen Ngan has a different thought: I think this subject does not require drawing war, you can look at it in a new way: the path the Vietnamese people have gone through, under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Our army is growing stronger and stronger, always fighting and building up its forces. Our weapons are more modern...
