- In recent years, the complex rainfall and flooding patterns have caused serious landslides in many areas, including the Tu Doan High School area and the Trung Thien Pagoda area in Na Duong commune. Not only have these landslides directly damaged structures, but they also pose a potential danger, threatening the lives and property of local residents.

In mid-June 2026, following reader feedback about landslides, we visited the area around Tu Doan High School and Trung Thien Pagoda in Na Duong commune. According to our observations, both locations are situated near the Ky Cung River. The distance from the schoolyard and pagoda to the river's surface is quite significant, the terrain is steep, and large, long stretches of landslides have already appeared.
Mr. Mong Van Lam, a security guard at Tu Doan High School, said: "I have been working at the school since 2014. Landslides have been occurring for many years, but in the last two years, the situation has become more complicated. In some places, the landslides are 1-5 meters deeper than the original state of the school."

Similarly, landslides into the river at Trung Thien Pagoda have been occurring for a long time. Mr. To Van Thoai, Acting Head of the Economic Department of Na Duong Commune, said: "Previously, landslides occurred in the school and pagoda area, and every year, the government and people have addressed the problem by clearing the soil. However, from 2024 to the present, the complex situation of rain and floods has led to increasingly serious landslides. Some structures and trees of the school and pagoda have been swept away by landslides. Other structures are also 'precarious,' and it is unknown when further landslides will occur."

According to a report from the People's Committee of Na Duong commune, Tu Doan High School has an area of over 9,200 m2. However, in recent years, a portion of the school's land has eroded into the river, leaving only over 8,000 m2. The eroded area is approximately 20 meters from the classroom block, with the nearest point only 10 meters from the school's buildings, and the length of the eroded area is 161 meters. Not only does this reduce the school's usable land area, but the erosion also poses a potential danger to life and property, as the erosion site is very close to the school's facilities and the learning and recreational areas for the students.

As for the Trung Thien Pagoda area, the front of the pagoda has suffered a landslide of about 15 meters in depth (two rows of large trees in front of the pagoda have fallen into the river); the landslide is about 20 meters long, and the height from the top of the landslide (pagoda courtyard) to the bottom is about 10 meters. Due to the presence of groundwater, the landslide is becoming increasingly serious.

The landslide not only directly affected the two aforementioned structures but also impacted the daily lives and production activities of many households. Specifically, right at the foot of the landslide area near the school and temple is a vital transportation route for residents of the villages of Dinh Chua, Po Moi, Phai Sen, and Ban Quan, leading to a 20-hectare production area and home to 30 households. The severe landslide has made travel extremely difficult for residents, directly affecting their lives and, especially, their production activities.
Faced with such severe landslides, in 2026, the People's Committee of Na Duong commune completed the construction of a gabion retaining wall approximately 40 meters long in the Trung Thien pagoda area, with a total cost of over 400 million VND. However, this is only a temporary, short-term solution because the landslide area is very long and wide, requiring significant investment.

Landslides in the area around Tu Doan High School and Trung Thien Pagoda in Na Duong commune have been occurring for a long time, and in recent years, the situation has become even more serious. In response to this, in addition to the proactive efforts of Na Duong commune, relevant levels and sectors have been present at the site to assess the current situation and report to and propose specific solutions to the Provincial People's Committee.
On April 6, 2026, the Provincial People's Committee issued Document No. 777/UBND-KTCN agreeing in principle to implement the project to mitigate riverbank erosion at Tu Doan High School and the Trung Thien Pagoda area. In fulfillment of the task assigned by the Provincial People's Committee, on May 8, 2026, the Provincial Investment and Construction Project Management Board submitted a report proposing the investment in the project to mitigate erosion at the two locations. The project involves the construction of a riverbank erosion control embankment with a total length of approximately 370 meters, including the embankment base, slope, foundation, and crest. Currently, relevant agencies are carrying out the necessary steps related to appraisal and resource allocation to implement the project in accordance with regulations.
Although initial solutions have been implemented, given the increasingly serious landslides at the two locations, we earnestly hope that the relevant authorities and departments will soon thoroughly address the landslide areas at Tu Doan High School and Trung Thien Pagoda. This will significantly contribute to ensuring the safety of lives and property, as well as promoting overall socio-economic development in the area.
