In 2025, Nam Lau commune will have over 2,645 hectares of coffee trees, of which 2,327.7 hectares are ready for harvest; the estimated yield is nearly 7,000 tons. With an average selling price of approximately 25 million VND/ton, the total income from coffee for the people will reach about 175 billion VND. Currently, the coffee plantations in Nam Lau commune are in the fruiting stage. Coffee growers in the area have actively applied scientific and technical advancements to production, resulting in a relatively high fruit setting rate. It is projected that in 2026, the total coffee production in the commune will reach over 7,300 tons, with an estimated income from coffee of approximately 185 billion VND.
Leading us up to his family's coffee plantation, Mr. Lo Van Muon, from Pung village, Nam Lau commune, enthusiastically said: "My family has 2 hectares of coffee trees; of which, nearly 1 hectare is already producing. Last year, my family harvested about 25 tons of fresh coffee cherries; after deducting expenses, we earned a profit of nearly 640 million VND. After harvesting, my family pruned, cared for, and fertilized the coffee trees, so they recovered quickly. Currently, the coffee trees are bearing more fruit than last year. I hope the price of coffee this year will be as good as last year."
Following Mr. Lo Van Muon's remarks, Mr. Ha Xuan Thuy, Head of the Economic Department of Nam Lau Commune, stated: Identifying support for the sustainable development of coffee cultivation as a key, long-term task, the commune's Economic Department has focused on advising on planning and orienting planting areas to suit local conditions; simultaneously, guiding people to develop coffee cultivation in a stable manner, avoiding spontaneous expansion, especially on forest land. From July 1st, 2025 to the present, the department has coordinated and organized 8 training courses, transferring scientific and technical knowledge on planting and caring for coffee trees to 180 people. In addition, the department has assigned staff to strengthen inspections and guide farmers to produce according to regulations, linking economic development from coffee cultivation with the protection of forest resources and the environment.

Nam Lau is one of two communes in Son La province selected to pilot sustainable coffee production meeting EUDR (European Union Regulation on Deforestation Prevention and Control). The commune recognizes this as both an opportunity to enhance product value and a necessary requirement for integration into the international market. Following the directive of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, at a meeting with the Association of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development on the implementation of the pilot program for sustainable coffee production meeting EUDR in Nam Lau and Muong Chanh communes on April 6th, Nam Lau commune focused on the following tasks: Continuing to establish a commune working group, headed by the commune's People's Committee leader, to organize the review, statistics, demarcation, and identification of key coffee-growing areas in the commune, especially areas at high risk of deforestation and encroachment on forest land for coffee cultivation. Directing the coordinating teams to participate in reviewing, delineating, and zoning to identify low-risk coffee areas (not located on forest land) and high-risk areas (planted on forest land according to EUDR regulations), thereby implementing timely measures for high-risk and low-risk areas. Organizing the dissemination of EUDR regulations and technical guidance documents to farmers in the area to meet export requirements and adapt to EUDR regulations. Advising people to plant coffee according to planning and land use so that coffee plantations yield long-term and legal economic value.

Mr. Cam Bun Loc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Lau commune, said: The commune is reviewing and strictly managing the coffee growing area, completing land records, clearly identifying planting areas, ensuring there is no area violating forest land, and meeting the criterion of "no deforestation after 2020". At the same time, guiding people to apply sustainable production processes, increasing the use of organic fertilizers, reducing pesticides, and improving product quality and safety.
In addition, Nam Lau commune continues to promote the idea of coffee growers linking production and consumption, coordinating with businesses and cooperatives to build a sustainable coffee value chain, linked to traceability and certification according to EU market requirements. It applies digital transformation in managing growing areas, updating production data, and gradually building a transparent traceability system to meet EUDR requirements. It strengthens inspection and supervision, promptly detecting and handling violations, especially encroachment on forest land and illegal land use conversion. The commune is determined to build a sustainable coffee growing area and increase income for the people.
