NGHE ANNguyen Quoc Tuan Kiet achieved 8.5 IELTS on the first test in May, in which Speaking achieved an absolute 5.
With this result, Kiet won the entrance exam to the 10th grade for the English major, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, according to the IELTS test method.
“I don't see this as an exam, I just want to try. At first, I thought I was about 7.5, 8.5, but it was unexpected,” said male student Dang Chanh Ky, Nam Dan district.
Kiet is the first child in a family with two brothers in Nam Dan town. Dad went to work abroad in Singapore, mother stayed at home. From a young age, the boy showed agility, good memory. When I was 4 years old, I started watching English alphabets and videos on Youtube. When he was in first grade, his parents realized that Kiet was gifted with languages, so he signed up for extra lessons at a center two kilometers away from home, two to three sessions a week. With his outstanding vocabulary, listening and speaking ability, after a few months of studying, the teacher decided to transfer him to study with 8-9 year old students.
In grade 6, Kiet knew that he would pursue this subject for a long time, so his family let him study at an English center in Vinh City. Three times a week, mother and daughter drove each other more than 20 km to Vinh to study.
With IELTS, Kiet took the exam in a relaxed mood. According to the male student, by spending 1-2 hours reading and re-reading news in foreign newspapers every day, he has diversified knowledge in various fields of social life. I also "learn while playing" by going to Youtube to watch videos in English and then practice speaking. This also helps me to thicken my vocabulary. In addition, Kiet plays games with students in many countries around the world, thereby listening, understanding and getting used to the use of English by foreigners.
"I also learn the idioms they often use to practice speaking naturally," Kiet shared.
Thanks to that, Kiet easily passed the Reading, Listening and Speaking tests. In which, the Speaking test got a perfect score, the other two parts were 8.5. The male student was impressed with the question in the Speaking section, which is: "State the criteria to help children develop comprehensively". He then argued that: "There should be a balance, should not be too attentive and push children to learn too much, need for entertainment to relax to develop the mind and other skills."
The "hardest" exam for Kiet is Writing. Kiet said that this is his weakness, so when he went to school at the center, the teacher guided a lot of different exercises. When writing, I often find the main idea, then develop the supporting ideas to make the essay longer. Each class, I spend about an hour writing social essays in English.
However, when taking the exam, the male student still fell into a deadlock in the first ten minutes. The exam requires writing about the importance of sports equipment such as treadmills, weight training equipment. Kiet said that although he plays sports, it is sports such as football or badminton, but he has never exercised weights or used these devices. Therefore, at first, I was not fluent in expressing and implementing my ideas. Therefore, Kiet is satisfied with a score of 7.5 in this skill.
Mr. Nguyen Tu Nga, English teacher, Dang Chanh Ky Secondary School, assessed that Kiet excelled in foreign languages compared to his peers. "My listening, speaking and reading skills are almost perfect, few people at the age of 15 reach this level," Mr. Nga said. In addition, the 15-year-old male student studies all subjects, is passionate about Chemistry and is a hard "art tree" of the school because he plays the Piano fluently.
Despite being invested in learning English methodically since childhood, Kiet said that he pursued this foreign language because he always wanted to explore the outside world. Therefore, I do not put pressure on myself to achieve. Kiet's most outstanding achievement so far is the third prize in the provincial English competition for grade 9 students.
“It is too early to talk about the future, in the near future I will try to accumulate more knowledge when I have contact with many good English friends. In addition, in my spare time, I will study more about Chemistry, which is also a passion of mine," said Kiet.
