In their early years studying at vocational schools, colleges, universities, or postgraduate programs, many Khmer Theravada Buddhist monks face numerous difficulties regarding tuition fees, research materials, and living expenses. For monks from rural areas and ethnic minority communities, the journey to acquire knowledge is even more challenging.
Based on this reality, in 2022, the Provincial Association of Patriotic Monks mobilized Khmer monks to establish a scholarship fund titled "Nurturing Monastic Talents to Serve the Dharma and the Nation" to support monastic students studying at educational institutions inside and outside the province. Although the value of each scholarship is not very large, this support comes at the right time, helping to alleviate difficulties and provide further motivation for monastic students on their educational journey.
Receiving scholarships for many years has helped Venerable Tran Hong Phuc, a student of the English Language Department at Kien Giang University, cover part of his study expenses. “With the support of the Patriotic Buddhist Monks' Solidarity Association of the province, I am even more aware of my responsibility in my studies and training. This is a motivation for me to strive to complete my training program and later return to serve the temple and Buddhist followers,” said Venerable Tran Hong Phuc.
Not only does the scholarship fund support monks studying at university, but it also assists many monks in continuing their studies at the postgraduate and doctoral levels. Thanks to these generous scholarships, many monks have the opportunity to access new knowledge, improve their professional skills, foreign language proficiency, and scientific research abilities. Having just received his master's degree from Tra Vinh University, Venerable Danh Hoang Nan believes that the monastic community needs to be equipped with knowledge of Buddhism, social issues, culture, law, and scientific research skills. This is an important foundation for monks to apply in Dharma propagation, education, preserving Khmer culture, and participating in social activities. “For monks, learning is a continuous process. The support from the scholarship fund helps monks reduce difficulties in their studies and research,” said Venerable Danh Hoang Nan.
Since 2023, the "Nurturing Talented Monks to Serve the Dharma and the Nation" scholarship fund has consistently provided nearly 100 million VND per year to Buddhist monks studying at vocational schools, colleges, universities, and doctoral research programs. According to Venerable Danh Phan, Vice Principal of the Khmer Theravada Buddhist Vocational School in Kien Giang, "Many of the scholarship recipients have achieved excellent academic results and are continuing their studies at higher levels."
According to Venerable Danh Dong, Standing Member of the Central Executive Council and Chairman of the Patriotic Monks' Solidarity Association of An Giang province, the training of Buddhist monks has always been a top priority for the association, as they are a crucial force in propagating the Dharma and preserving and promoting the traditional cultural identity of the Khmer people. Since its establishment, the scholarship fund "Nurturing Buddhist Monks to Serve the Dharma and the Nation" has become a bridge of compassion between benefactors and aspiring monks with strong willpower and a desire to learn. "Through this scholarship fund, the association aims to provide opportunities for monks to have more motivation to study, research, and train. The association hopes that after completing the training program, they will become virtuous and knowledgeable monks, actively contributing to the development of Khmer Theravada Buddhism, participating in social activities, and working together to build a more prosperous An Giang province," said Venerable Danh Dong.
