Taking advantage of the abundant aquatic resources in the Buôn Triết irrigation reservoir (Buôn Triết commune) over the years, the Buôn Triết commune Fisheries Association has coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lắk district to release fish fry and plan the exploitation of many available freshwater fish species such as carp, crucian carp, catfish, and grass carp...
Mr. Truong Van Doan, Head of the Buon Triet Commune Fisheries Association, said that fishing has significantly improved the income of many members. On average, each member catches 4-6 kg of various types of fish per day, and during the high water season, the amount caught can double. In addition, the association also encourages members to raise some types of fish with high economic value.
Mr. Hoang Van Hao (from Lac Rung hamlet) shared: “Thanks to the existing cage system, since 2022, I have been raising tilapia and red-tailed catfish in the Buon Triet irrigation reservoir. With the current scale, my family harvests about 4-5 tons of fish each year. Currently, the price of fish fluctuates between 40,000 and 60,000 VND/kg, so after deducting expenses, my family has a considerable income.”

Besides fish farming, Buôn Triết commune also has a promising model of black snail farming (apple snail farming) by Mr. Nguyễn Viết Thăng's family (Tung 3 hamlet). Mr. Thăng's family has 2,000 m² of ponds for raising various types of fish. In 2021, recognizing the potential of black snail farming, he decided to buy about 10 kg of snail juveniles to experiment with in a pond of nearly 1,000 m². After only 6 months of raising them, the snails began laying eggs and could be sold commercially. Mr. Thăng selected snails of the standard size for further breeding. Thanks to this, his family no longer needs to buy juveniles and can harvest snails year-round.
“To create an environment as close to nature as possible, I planted aquatic plants like water lilies and water hyacinths to serve as food, provide shade for the snails, and help maintain a stable pH level in the water. Black apple snails are very easy to feed, so they require almost no special care. I just need to check the amount of food to avoid excess that pollutes the water or insufficient food that slows their growth,” Mr. Thang shared.
According to Mr. Thang, commercially farmed snails (20-32 snails per kilogram) sell for 40,000-60,000 VND per kilogram. After deducting expenses, his family earns a profit of over 50 million VND per year. Currently, Mr. Thang's family has converted their entire pond area to raising black snails.

According to Ms. Mai Sao, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Lak District, many households have boldly invested in aquaculture to improve their income. To ensure economic efficiency in aquaculture, the district has advised people to raise high-yielding aquatic species and supported farmers in accessing loan sources.
In 2024, the aquaculture area in the district was 1,560 hectares, of which 810 hectares were dedicated to aquaculture (accounting for 51.9% of the total aquaculture area); 750 hectares were used for aquaculture in reservoirs, mainly focusing on improved extensive farming methods (using readily available natural food sources to reduce costs).
In the coming period, the locality will continue to disseminate information and provide training on harvesting and post-harvest product preservation methods; encourage aquaculture establishments to invest in equipment to serve production, meeting technical standards and regulations; and develop annual seed production plans that are appropriate to the needs and actual situation.
