On July 10th, the film "Flight to You" was removed from Netflix at the request of the Vietnam Film Department. However, like many films previously discovered to contain the illegal "nine-dash line" map, "Flight to You" is no longer available on Netflix in Vietnam but continues to be shown in other countries.
Previously,FPT Telecom Corporation removed the film from all platforms and blurred the map containing the illegal "nine-dash line" before screening it.
Films containing the illegal "nine-dash line" map have been removed from Netflix in Vietnam.
On the afternoon of July 9th, the Department of Cinematography sent Official Letter No. 870/DA-VP to Netflix and Official Letter No. 871/DA-VP to FPT Telecom Joint Stock Company, requesting the removal of the film "Flight to You".
An examination of 39 episodes of the popular Netflix series "Go with the Wind" revealed that the "nine-dash line" (or "cow's tongue line") appears on the map in numerous scenes.
Specifically, this is in episodes 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 38. Episode 30 clearly shows the "nine-dash line" from 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Additionally, there is dialogue and subtitles stating, "One day this map will reach many places around the world ," from 41 minutes and 18 seconds to 41 minutes and 55 seconds in episode 18.
"The depiction of the nine-dash line and the content in the dialogue and subtitles as mentioned above in the film is incorrect, infringes upon Vietnam's national sovereignty , and violates the provisions of point d, clause 1, Article 9 of the Cinema Law No. 05/2022/QH15," the Cinema Department emphasized in its official letter to Netflix.
The review and inspection results show that FPT Telecommunications Joint Stock Company blurred the map image in many scenes of the drama "Going with the Wind" in episodes 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, and 38.
However, the Vietnam Film Department asserted that the film's content was inaccurate and violated Vietnam's national sovereignty, making it unsuitable for distribution in Vietnam.
Prior to "Flight to You," a series of Chinese-produced TV dramas were found to contain the illegal "nine-dash line" map: "Ice and Fire," "You Are My Pride," "One Life, One World," "To Our Warm Youth," etc.
"Vietnamese audiences react very strongly whenever they discover a film containing the illegal 'nine-dash line'. They call for a boycott of these films, but they continue to be shown on pirated websites and platforms abroad."
Netflix also had to remove the series "Madam Secretary" from Vietnam and cut scenes from the series "To Our Warm Youth". Not only TV series, but some theatrical films that included the illegal "nine-dash line" were discovered and banned from Vietnamese theaters.
The film "The Antiquities Hunter" has been banned from screening in Vietnam.
Most recently, the movie "Barbie" was banned in Vietnam. The film "The Treasure Hunter" was found by the National Film Classification and Appraisal Council to contain the "nine-dash line," so the Vietnam Film Department banned its screening.
