Named in the starting lineup by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the match against Curacao in Group E of the 2026 World Cup on the morning of June 15th, Neuer made his 20th appearance in the most exciting tournament on the planet. This achievement helps the veteran goalkeeper equal Hugo Lloris' record, becoming the goalkeeper with the most appearances in World Cup history.
But alongside this proud milestone, the Bayern Munich star also received a less-than-pleasant statistic. The goal conceded against Curacao made Neuer the first goalkeeper in history to concede a goal in five different World Cups.
The 2026 World Cup will be Neuer's fifth appearance at the biggest tournament on the planet, following his appearances in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. This achievement puts him on par with Mexican legend Antonio Carbajal. Meanwhile, Guillermo Ochoa, despite being called up six times, has only started in three World Cups.
At 40 years and 79 days old, Neuer also holds the record for being the oldest player to ever represent Germany at a major tournament. At the 2026 World Cup, he will be the sixth oldest player in the tournament, behind only Ochoa, Craig Gordon, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, and Edin Dzeko.
Following Germany's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, many believed Neuer would retire from the national team. However, the goalkeeper, born in 1986, still showed a strong desire to contribute and continued to prove his class as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of world football.
