The draft "Project for the Development of Vietnam's Entertainment Industries," developed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is expected to create a new phase of development for this sector.

Turning entertainment activities into an economic sector.

The Vietnamese entertainment industry has recovered significantly after COVID-19, particularly in areas such as film, music , and event organization. Vietnamese film box office revenue has grown, with films like "The Godfather," "Mrs. Nu's House," and the "Flip Face" series achieving record box office success. Reality TV shows like "The Masked Singer," "Brother Says Hi," and "Brother Overcomes Thousands of Thorns" have also attracted large audiences, demonstrating the appeal of domestic entertainment content. International music shows and events, such as BlackPink and Charlie Puth's tours in Vietnam, have achieved record ticket sales, proving the potential of the domestic market.

Recreational sports are also thriving, with tournaments attracting millions of viewers and sponsorships from major brands like Viettel and Mocha. Recreational sports events such as marathons (VPBank Hanoi Marathon) and traditional martial arts tournaments are becoming increasingly popular. Meanwhile, platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Zalo have become channels for developing entertainment content, with KOLs and influencers, entertainment channels, short videos, and live streams attracting millions of views.

Companies like POPS Music, Dong Tay Promotion, Cat Tien Sa, Dien Quan Media, M-TP Entertainment… are investing heavily in producing diverse content (television, music, film) and managing artists. These entertainment companies not only produce programs but also build artists' images, train trainees, and apply modern technology to improve product quality. Dong Tay Promotion produces thousands of hours of television content annually.

Associate Professor Bui Hoai Son, a full-time National Assembly representative on the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society, stated that the entertainment industry, including films, music, video games, performing arts, and cultural events, not only meets the growing entertainment needs of the people but also serves as a crucial driving force for economic and cultural development. In the context of Vietnam aiming to achieve an economic scale exceeding US$500 billion by 2025, the entertainment industry is considered a key sector, bringing immense economic, cultural, and social value.

With over 100 million people, the demand for entertainment, especially high-quality forms of entertainment, is constantly increasing. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognizes that developing the entertainment industry will maximize its potential and growth. The plan for developing Vietnam's entertainment industry will help optimize the exploitation of this potential, transforming entertainment activities into a large-scale and efficient economic sector.

"The entertainment industry not only serves domestic needs but is also an effective tool for promoting the country's culture and image to the world. The project will help guide the development of products with Vietnamese identity that are internationally competitive," said Mr. Le Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Copyright Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Contributing 10%-12% to GDP

The nine main sectors and fields mentioned in the "Plan for the Development of Vietnam's Entertainment Industries" include: film, television, music, performing arts, entertainment games, sports, tourism, cultural events, and digital content creation. The stakeholders involved in the entertainment industry value chain include state management agencies and units; artists, experts, and creators; businesses operating in the entertainment industry; and consumers who enjoy entertainment products.

The project is expected to be implemented in all provinces and cities nationwide, with a focus on major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, which have strong potential for the development of the entertainment industry and play a leading role as centers for creativity, production, and distribution.

The project, to be implemented from 2025 to 2035, outlines specific directions, objectives, tasks, and solutions. The overall goal is to contribute to GDP, create jobs, stimulate the development of other sectors such as technology applications, cultural services, and cultural tourism. Simultaneously, it aims to enhance national cultural values, promote the image of Vietnam to the world, and integrate into global culture. It also seeks to meet the entertainment, creative, social connection, and educational needs of the people, thereby improving their quality of life.

The specific goals are that by 2035, the entertainment industry will contribute 10%-12% to GDP. Vietnam's entertainment industry will be among the top 5 in the Asian region. At least 10 major entertainment product production centers will be developed in key provinces and cities. The aim is to export at least 100 entertainment products to various markets.

The key point mentioned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is the development of the entertainment industry based on Vietnamese cultural identity, emphasizing local and unique elements. The Ministry also encourages creativity based on cultural heritage, applying modern technology to revitalize traditional art forms, bringing them closer to audiences, especially young people.

"The project's funding is expected to come from three sources: state budget: 20% (policy support, training); private investment: 60% (production projects, infrastructure); and international cooperation: 20% (technology transfer, investment funds)."
