Auspicious first-footing day in 2024
Ancient people believed that the transition period between the old year and the new year was when the best energy was gathered. Therefore, if everything went smoothly and luckily on the first day of the new year, the whole year would be prosperous and auspicious.
According to the 2023 lunar calendar, the first day of the Lunar New Year falls on the day of Giap Thin. This is an auspicious day, making it extremely lucky to go out and be the first visitor to a house on New Year's Day.
Auspicious time for first-footing (visiting a house on New Year's Day).
According to feng shui expert Nguyen Song Ha, the hour of the Rat (11 PM - 1 AM) on New Year's Eve of the Year of the Dragon is considered an inauspicious hour. The hour of the Heavenly Prison is considered bad.
During this time, people should avoid leaving their homes… to prevent bad luck. Instead, family members should gather around the dinner table, chat, exchange New Year greetings, sing joyful songs, and give each other New Year's gifts…
The first day of the Lunar New Year is considered an auspicious day for going out, visiting houses, and performing the first-footing ritual to pray for wealth and good fortune. This is a long-standing cultural tradition of the Vietnamese people, with the hope of a prosperous new year, filled with joy, and everything going as desired.
Expert Song Ha asserts that a day has many auspicious and inauspicious hours. Specifically, the first day of Tet (Lunar New Year) has six auspicious time slots, including:
Binh Dan (3am-5am): Commander
Mau Thin (7am-9am): Thanh Long
Year of the Snake (9am-11am): Bright Hall
Year of the Monkey (3 PM - 5 PM): Golden Treasury
Year of the Rooster (5 PM - 7 PM): Bao Quang
Year of the Pig (9 PM - 11 PM): Jade Hall
"The hours of the Tiger, Dragon, and Snake are very suitable for housewarming ceremonies," expert Song Ha further noted.
According to the expert, 2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon, and homeowners should avoid asking people born in the lunar years of 1938, 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008 to perform the first-footing ceremony. This is because these individuals have the Heavenly Stem of Mau, which clashes with the Heavenly Stem of Giap of the year.
Homeowners should also avoid asking people born in the year of the Dragon to perform the first-footing ritual at their house, company, etc. This is because people born in the year of the Dragon are affected by both the Tai Sui and the Tam Tai misfortunes.
