UEFA officially abolishes the away goals rule after more than half a century.

On June 24, 2021, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) officially announced the abolition of the away goals rule in all club competitions starting from the 2021-2022 season.

The away goals rule was introduced by UEFA in 1965 to encourage teams to play attacking football when playing away from home. Under the old rules, if two teams were tied on aggregate after two legs, the team that scored more away goals would advance.

However, UEFA argues that home and away advantages in modern football have significantly diminished compared to the past. Therefore, starting from the 2021-2022 season, matches tied after two legs will go into extra time and a penalty shootout instead of considering away goals.

This decision sparked much debate among experts and fans.
