According to announcements from his family and students, guitarist Nguyen Van Dy passed away at 1:05 PM on June 28th, at the age of 69. His passing leaves a deep sense of loss for many generations of artists, students, and audiences who love classical guitar.
As one of the first formally trained guitarists in Vietnam, Nguyen Van Dy graduated from the Hanoi Conservatory of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music), and then continued his studies at the Bratislava Conservatory (formerly Czechoslovakia, now part of Slovakia).

Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to the guitar in both teaching and performing. Although he pursued classical music, Nguyen Van Dy always impressed with his free-spirited, emotional, and distinctly artistic performance style.
In the Vietnamese guitar community, he is renowned for his exceptional technique of playing guitar from behind. Despite not being able to see the neck of the guitar, his hands glide precisely across the frets, creating mesmerizing melodies that have become his signature on many stages.
Not only possessing masterful technique, Nguyen Van Dy is also known for his ability to recreate many sounds of life, such as the gongs of the Central Highlands, the babbling of streams, the chirping of birds, or the three bells of the Hoan Kiem Lake Post Office in the song "People of Hanoi"... on his guitar.

Having worked for many years at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, he was in charge of the guitar department and was known as an exemplary teacher, strict in his profession but wholeheartedly dedicated to his students. Nguyen Van Dy was also the teacher of many famous guitarists such as musicians Le Minh Son, Duy Hung, Thu Ha, Nguyen Van Phuc...
Despite having mentored generations of artists, he still dedicates 3-4 hours each day to practicing the piano. He always reminds his students that talent is only a part of it; the most important things are passion, dedication, and a positive attitude towards the profession.
Besides his training work, artist Nguyen Van Dy has also diligently brought classical guitar closer to the public through numerous performance programs. One of his greatest achievements is founding the Classical Guitar Club in the early 2000s and serving as its chairman for over a decade. Under his leadership, the club regularly holds monthly concerts at the auditorium of the Department of Culture and Information (16 Le Thai To, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi), becoming a familiar meeting place for classical guitar enthusiasts.
In addition to his work in teaching and performing, he also served as the Director of the Dihavina Music Publishing House before retiring in Hanoi.
The memorial service for guitarist Nguyen Van Dy will be held at 1:15 PM on June 30th at the Dong Da Hospital Funeral Home (180 Nguyen Luong Bang Alley, Dong Da District, Hanoi). The funeral service and procession will take place at 2:30 PM on the same day. He will be cremated at the Hoan Vu Crematorium in Hanoi.
