According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nghe An, as of October 2025, the province had a total herd of 246,525 buffaloes, down 0.86% over the same period last year. Realizing that raising buffaloes is not as economically efficient as before, people tend to switch to other livestock or switch to jobs with more stable income.

On the other hand, Nghe An currently owns a total herd of 561,415 cows, an increase of 13,079 cows, equivalent to an increase of 2.39% over the same period in 2024. Of which, the dairy cow herd alone is estimated at 80,770 cows, an increase of 0.68%. The province's cow herd has maintained its growth momentum thanks to improved farming methods, with most localities advocating for the development of cow herds. High consumption demand and good prices for cows help farmers have stable profits.
In recent times, Nghe An has issued many practical credit support policies, combining programs such as the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, support programs of enterprises, agricultural extension programs, breed programs, etc., thereby allocating funds for Zebu cattle herd transformation, grass planting, and processing agricultural by-products as feed for fattening beef cattle.

By October 2025, Nghe An's total herd of cows will increase by more than 13,000 compared to the same period in 2024. Photo: Viet Khanh.
Based on the existing foundation, in the coming time, Nghe An will continue to prioritize the development of concentrated cattle farms, applying high technology like the way TH Group, Vinamilk... are doing. In addition, it will increase the application of scientific and technological advances in breeding work to simultaneously solve the "dual goal" of both increasing productivity and improving product quality.
