On the afternoon of March 28th, a dialogue conference with tourism service businesses in Nghe An province for the year 2025 was held. This was an opportunity for management agencies and businesses to exchange ideas and find solutions to overcome difficulties, aiming to make tourism in Nghe An a key economic sector by 2030.
Opinions expressed at the conference assessed that Nghe An's tourism sector has achieved some noteworthy results but still faces many limitations: a shortage of human resources in both quantity and quality, a lack of distinctive products, a lack of large investors, inconsistent tourism infrastructure, a low percentage of international tourists, and insufficient policies to support tourism development... This has resulted in a region once renowned for its picturesque landscapes lacking competitiveness in tourism compared to other localities.
A representative from a business shared that they really want to bring tourists to Nghe An but sometimes feel "powerless." Accommodation costs are not attractive enough, inter-regional transportation is inconvenient, tourism products are monotonous, and there is a lack of entertainment options... Some tour operators are even "helpless" because they can't book rooms due to hotels requiring meals included – "no meals, no accommodation."
In particular, the "seasonal" tourism mentality in Nghe An remains a concern for many businesses and tourists. At popular destinations like Cua Lo, price gouging, aggressive touting, and "protection rackets" for electric vehicles still occur.
How can Nghe An become not just a stopover point but a truly attractive "destination"? This remains a difficult question.
Speaking at the conference, Ms. Tran Thi My Hanh, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, acknowledged the heartfelt opinions of the businesses and stated that she would direct relevant units to advise on policies to support businesses and report to the Provincial People's Committee to direct the removal of difficulties for each sector. She also shared the province's orientation for promoting tourism development in the coming time. Specifically, the province will define distinctive tourism products, focusing on planning two national tourism zones: Nam Dan and Vinh - Dien Chau; building model tourism sites in Nam Dan, Cua Lo, Con Cuong, and Quy Chau to create momentum for development; developing unique tourism products, implementing a comprehensive plan, and identifying distinctive tourism products suitable to the potential of each locality. Research will also be conducted on developing new tourism products, including folk song and traditional music tours, and developing night tourism.
The Department will research and propose a resolution on specific policies to support businesses investing in tourism in Nghe An, including incentives on land and various taxes, bank interest rates, etc. Besides attracting large corporations, the Department will propose policy mechanisms for tourism startups to create a tourism business ecosystem in the area. Regarding human resources, it will develop mechanisms to support and attract highly qualified and specialized personnel into the tourism sector; and promote training and development of human resources.
In 2024, Nghe An province is expected to receive over 9.45 million tourists, 113% higher than the same period in 2023. Of these, over 5.93 million will be overnight visitors, 112% higher than the same period in 2023; international visitors will reach 120,500, 155% higher than the same period in 2023; total revenue from tourism is estimated at 28,569 billion VND, of which tourism revenue is estimated at 11,160 billion VND.
The province has organized numerous promotional activities both domestically and internationally, participated in tourism promotion fairs and conferences; and welcomed famtrip and presstrip delegations to survey tourism products. Several new products have been prioritized for development, such as fishing village tourism, craft village tourism, rural tourism, and night tourism.
In 2025, Nghe An aims to welcome 6.1 million overnight visitors (111% compared to 2024), including 130,000 international visitors (108% compared to 2024), with tourism service revenue reaching 11,800 billion VND (107% compared to 2024).
The Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that the Department will work alongside businesses, creating favorable conditions for the sustainable development of tourism in Nghe An, gradually making it a key economic sector of the province.
