The strength to overcome adversity
"After hardship comes happiness" - many villagers often say this when referring to Mrs. Pham Thi Vinh, from Ca Phe hamlet, Dong Hy commune. Nearly half her life has been filled with hardship due to her husband's drug addiction, at times seemingly insurmountable. But with the resilience and self-sacrifice of a rural woman, she has stood firm in the face of adversity and built a stable life for her family.
In her small house nestled amidst lush green tea plantations, Mrs. Vinh began her life story in a simple, down-to-earth voice: "Thank God, I've never suffered from any serious illness. Otherwise, whatever comes my way, I just try my best to overcome it."
In 1991, Ms. Vinh got married hoping for a peaceful life like other women. However, shortly after the wedding, she discovered her husband was addicted to drugs. This shock shattered all her plans for a happy family. Instead of giving up or resenting him, she chose to stay, encouraging her husband to overcome his addiction, hoping to preserve their family happiness.
"He was kind and loving towards his wife and children, but drugs had taken a deep hold on him. From opium to heroin, he tried to quit many times but failed," she recalled.
To make a living, she borrowed capital from relatives, bought tea, and then sold it retail at the market. Thanks to her diligence and business acumen, her business prospered. From just a few hundred kilograms of tea initially, the amount she bought and supplied to traders increased year after year.
At one point, she sold over 100 tons of dried tea leaves annually, becoming one of the largest tea buyers in the Minh Lap area. Her stable business provided her family with the means to support their lives and educate their children.
However, the difficulties did not end there. Her husband's serious illness and social prejudices caused many business deals to gradually close. The tea business, once the family's main source of income, also declined over time.
Her husband passed away after years of battling illness. Just a few months later, her father-in-law also died. The consecutive deaths of two loved ones in such a short period placed a heavy emotional burden on this woman who had already endured many hardships. But she told herself she had to be strong to continue living, working, and caring for her family.
For many years, despite the hardships of life, she devotedly cared for her elderly mother-in-law, never complaining or blaming fate. "There were times when I felt very sad, but thinking that I still had children, relatives, and my health, I had to try my best to work and live," she confided.
When the tea business became unprofitable, she shifted her investment focus to agricultural production. She used all her accumulated capital to buy more land and expand her production area. Today, her family owns over 5,000 square meters of cultivated land, of which nearly 2,000 square meters are tea plantations currently producing crops; the remaining area is used for growing grass, raising cattle, and growing vegetables.
Thanks to hard work, applying production experience, and developing livestock farming towards a commercial direction, her family now earns over 300 million VND per year from tea cultivation and fattening buffalo and cattle.
Locals commented that the most admirable quality in Ms. Vinh was not only her diligence but also her optimistic spirit and resilience in overcoming difficulties. Despite experiencing many losses, she remained sincere, lived harmoniously with her neighbors, and was always ready to help those around her.
Now that she has overcome the most difficult days of her life, her greatest joy is seeing her grown-up son have a stable life.
Looking at the lush green tea hills in front of her house, the experienced woman smiled calmly. After all the hardships she had gone through, she understood that resilience and tireless hard work were the pillars that helped her overcome adversity and move towards peaceful days.
