From the center of Sa Pa ward, moving along Phan Si Pang street to residential group number 6, Sa Pa ward, visitors will see a small temple located right on the roadside, that is Hang Pho temple.
According to feng shui, Hang Pho Temple has the terrain of “Tien thuy hau son”. In front of the temple is Muong Hoa valley - a famous tourist destination for visitors from near and far; behind the temple is a rocky mountain, creating a solid and majestic position.
Mr. Dinh Van Tu - the incense master of Hang Pho temple said: According to historical documents and the elderly in Sa Pa, Hang Pho temple was built in the 19th century, is one of the oldest temples in Sa Pa land. This place worships and commemorates the merits of Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan and talented generals in the 3 great wars against the Yuan - Mongol invasion.
The temple is named Hang Pho Temple because it is located in the busiest and most bustling area of Sa Pa in the past, where tourists often passed by. Hang Pho Temple was built a long time ago, going through the ups and downs of history, the temple has been restored and embellished many times. Up to now, Hang Pho Temple still retains its ancient look with mossy tiled roofs, rows of ancient trees, and ancient artifacts from ancient times in the temple.
With important historical and cultural values, in 2005, Hang Pho Temple was recognized as a historical and cultural relic of Lao Cai province. Every year, on August 20 (lunar calendar), local people gather at Hang Pho Temple to participate in the solemn and sacred death anniversary ceremony of the Father, commemorating the great contributions of Tran Dynasty Hien Thanh Hung Dao Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan. Not only on holidays and Tet, but also on normal days, Hang Pho Temple attracts a large number of people and tourists to attend, offer incense and worship.
Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Linh - a resident of Cam Duong ward who often comes to offer incense at Hang Pho temple said: "My family and I often go to Hang Pho temple at the beginning of the month, the end of the month, the beginning of the year, and the end of the year. Every time I come here, I feel the temple space is very sacred, making my heart peaceful and calm. Not only my family but also many tourists from inside and outside the province come here to worship the Mother Goddess and the Saint, wishing for peace, health, family happiness and prosperity."
Although Hang Pho Temple is a provincial historical and cultural relic, and also an important spiritual tourist destination of Sa Pa ward, the temple's infrastructure is currently facing many difficulties. The temple is located on a narrow street, has a small area, the construction works have been degraded, and many items have been damaged. In particular, the temple grounds do not have a parking lot, making it difficult for tourists to visit and worship. Many visitors here expressed their wish that the temple would soon be restored and be more spacious.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dai in Lao Cai ward said: "I am a resident of Lao Cai ward, I often go to Hang Pho temple. I find the ancient temple very sacred but currently many items are degraded. I hope the temple will soon be restored and repaired to make it convenient for tourists to visit and worship."
Discussing with us about solutions to promote the value as well as the restoration and embellishment of Hang Pho Temple, Mr. To Ngoc Lien - Chairman of Sa Pa Ward People's Committee said: Hang Pho Temple relic on the Phan Si Pang road down to Cat Cat tourist area is a very narrow road, on weekends there are a lot of tourists so it is difficult to move. Especially, the temple has no parking space, so it is inconvenient for tourists to visit and worship. Sa Pa Ward People's Committee has discussed plans to expand the temple space, build different floors, including arranging parking space for tourists. Currently, the project is in the process of adjusting and mobilizing resources, especially socialized resources to invest in and upgrade Hang Pho Temple, to meet the requirements of spiritual tourism development in Sa Pa in the coming time.
Hang Pho Temple is an ancient temple with important historical and cultural values, located in the system of important relics and spiritual works of Sa Pa ward. Hopefully, in the coming time, Hang Pho Temple relic will soon be restored and embellished to be more spacious, meeting the spiritual needs of people and tourists. Thereby, promoting the development of spiritual tourism, making Sa Pa become the leading spiritual tourism center in the Northern region, contributing to the goal of welcoming 12.2 million visitors of Sa Pa National Tourist Area by 2030.
