We visited Bat Xat No. 1 High School in early October, when the teachers and students were busily preparing for an important event – the 50th anniversary of the school's founding. Bat Xat No. 1 High School now boasts modern facilities with multi-story buildings, a spacious campus, and a teaching and learning environment that ranks among the most favorable in the province. Mr. Vu Xuan Long, the principal of Bat Xat No. 1 High School, shared: "The current generation of teachers and students are always proud of this school, and even more proud of its rich tradition and educational achievements over the past 50 years."

Bat Xat No. 1 High School was established by taking over the premises of Bat Xat High School, and has gone through many ups and downs with 5 relocations. In 1968, it was the Bat Xat District Secondary and High School, established in Ban Vuoc commune. The school's first cohort had only 6 teachers and 30 students, mainly children of ethnic minorities from Ban Vuoc, Trinh Tuong, Quang Kim, and Ban Qua communes.
From 1972 to 1979, the school was separated and moved to the center of Bat Xat district; in the 1979-1980 school year, the school temporarily ceased operations due to the border war; from 1981 to 1991, the school was re-established and built in Ban Xeo commune; from 1991 to the present, the school has moved to the center of Bat Xat town. Throughout this difficult journey, especially in the last 15 years, generations of teachers and students have strived to overcome difficulties, improve the quality of education and increase the number of students. In the 2003-2004 school year, Bat Xat No. 1 High School was built as a solid, multi-story building with sufficient classrooms and offices, surrounded by a green, clean, and beautiful environment, with 18 classrooms, 44 staff and teachers, and 672 students.
The "cradle" of human resource training in Bat Xat district.
Recalling the school's history, teacher Vu Xuan Long shared: The 2018-2019 school year marked two important milestones for the school: its 50th anniversary and its relocation to a new building with more spacious, modern, and impressive facilities. Over the past 50 years, the school has educated 8,200 students, with over 8,000 graduating from high school; nearly 6,000 students have gone on to study at universities, colleges, and vocational schools. For a border district like Bat Xat, which still faces many difficulties, this is a crucial human resource contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
Further research into the school's history revealed that many former students have held and continue to hold important positions in their hometowns, provinces, and central government agencies. Notable examples include Comrade Cao Duc Hai (a student from the 1972-1975 graduating class, former Head of the Propaganda Department of the Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee, former Secretary of the Lao Cai City Party Committee); Teacher Pham Van Lien (a student from the 1975-1978 graduating class, former Principal of the school from 1987-1992, former Principal of the Lao Cai Provincial Political School); Comrade Nguyen Van Tam (a student from the 1969-1972 graduating class, former Director of the Yen Bai Department of Health); Comrade Tran Thi Tam (a student from the 1968-1971 graduating class, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Children's Newspaper); and Comrade Vu Thanh Trung (a student from the 1998-2001 graduating class, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Vietnam Medicinal Materials Joint Stock Company). Comrade Ly Thi Vinh (a student from the 1990-1993 graduating class, Deputy Head of the Organization Department of the Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee)... Thousands of students from mountainous regions and ethnic minority groups have now become provincial and district officials, engineers, doctors, teachers, military officers, skilled workers, and successful farmers, building happy lives for themselves and contributing their efforts and intellect to building their homeland.
Upon hearing the news that Bat Xat No. 1 High School was preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary on November 10, 2018, Mr. Lu Van Xuan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Vi commune and a former student of the school, reminisced: "Under the roof of Bat Xat No. 1 High School, the teachers nurtured our dreams and provided us with the knowledge to confidently bước into life. It is truly joyful and a source of pride that Bat Xat No. 1 High School is becoming increasingly spacious and beautiful, and that teachers and students have achieved many accomplishments in the noble task of 'nurturing future generations'."
Steadfast in innovation and integration
Visiting Bat Xat No. 1 High School these days, we felt the vibrant and bustling atmosphere. Teachers and students are striving to excel in teaching and learning, busily preparing for the school's 50th anniversary celebration. In the 2018-2019 school year, Bat Xat No. 1 High School had 18 classes with 680 students. This is the first year the school has had 70 ethnic minority students from highland communes boarding at the school, contributing to improved attendance rates and educational quality. On the path of educational reform today, teachers and students are united and striving to build a disciplined, cultured school with genuine educational quality.

In a conversation with us, Ms. Tong Thi Thuy Linh, a Master of Literature, said: "The school's teaching staff mainly consists of young, dynamic, and enthusiastic teachers who are always striving to learn from previous generations and actively innovating teaching methods to meet the demands of educational reform." Meanwhile, Vu To Nga, a student in class 12A1, added: "We are always proud to study at a school with a long tradition; that is also our motivation to study hard."
In the joyous celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bat Xat No. 1 High School, Principal Vu Xuan Long affirmed: While 50 years may not be a very long time, for a school located in a mountainous, border region facing difficulties like Bat Xat No. 1 High School, the achievements the school has attained are truly something to be proud of. In the future, the teachers and students will continue to unite and strive to make the school a strong and comprehensive educational institution.
