( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - With the determination not to accept poverty, two farmers Le Hung Kiem (70 years old), in Dong Thuan residential group, Pho Vinh ward (Duc Pho town) and Tran Van Truc (55 years old), in An Phu village, Hanh Thuan commune (Nghia Hanh) have worked hard to reap "sweet fruits" on their homeland's land.

Make the barren land bloom

Visiting Mr. Le Hung Kiem's house, we were quite surprised to see a pepper and custard apple garden of more than 0.5 hectares on the sandy land along the coast. Nearly 30 years ago, this old farmer was determined to change the traditional farming method to escape poverty. Mr. Kiem took the trouble to go to the Central Highlands to learn about farming experience. After a period of research and study and realizing that the soil was suitable, Mr. Kiem decided to invest in pepper cultivation. Thanks to focusing on investing in seeds, automatic irrigation systems as well as care, Mr. Kiem's pepper garden has a very high yield. From the initial small area, Mr. Kiem has now expanded his pepper garden to 700 trees. During each care and harvest season, this old farmer also creates seasonal jobs for nearly 10 local workers.

“In the past, despite having favorable conditions of a lot of land, but working hard to grow crops only stopped at the level of enough to eat, not enough to have surplus. From that reason, I thought I had to boldly grow new crops, with high economic efficiency. So, I went to new lands, learned from the experiences of those who went before to apply to develop the family economy. Thanks to my determination, daring to think, daring to do, I was one of the pioneers in the locality to bring pepper to grow on this sandy land, so that many other farmers could learn and apply it,” said Mr. Kiem.

Not only growing pepper, on the sandy land of his family, Mr. Kiem also planted 120 custard apple trees. Custard apple is a sun-loving plant, very suitable for the local soil and weather. Moreover, custard apple is very fruitful, each year it will produce 2 crops, the price of custard apple is always high, from 40 thousand VND/kg or more, so growers have a fairly high income. Mr. Kiem shared, thanks to the integrated farming model, I have changed my life and raised my children to be successful in their studies. Therefore, I realize that farmers who want to get rich from agriculture, just being diligent and hardworking is not enough, they must be dynamic, bold in investing, and applying science and technology to be able to reap sweet fruits.

With his farming model, on average each year, after deducting all expenses, Mr. Kiem has a revenue of nearly 200 million VND.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Pho Vinh Ward, Le Duc An, commented that Mr. Le Hung Kiem is an active farmer. Although he has a comfortable life, he does not rest but is always dedicated to developing the family economy. In addition, Mr. Kiem also enthusiastically supports experience and seeds to help local farmers increase their income. Mr. Kiem has been a good farmer and businessman for many years in the locality.

Actively enrich

Born into a farming family, Mr. Tran Van Truc was familiar with farming since he was a child. After getting married, Mr. Truc did many jobs to earn money to support his life, but his income was not much, poverty still haunted him. With a desire to get rich on his homeland, Mr. Truc actively researched, visited, and learned about effective and highly profitable livestock farming models.

Realizing that raising cows has a stable output, few diseases, and his family's land has the advantage of growing grass to raise cows, Mr. Truc decided to invest capital and build barns to raise cows. From the initial 2 cows, Mr. Truc's cow farm now has about 25 cows (at times up to 40 cows). In addition, on an area of nearly 1,000m2, Mr. Truc built more than 500m2 of pig pens and over 400m2 of chicken pens.

“To raise livestock effectively, first of all, it is necessary to choose good breeds and ensure quality. During the raising process, it is necessary to fully vaccinate livestock and poultry. At the same time, regularly clean and disinfect barns and the surrounding environment; take care of them and feed them with adequate nutrition,” Mr. Truc confided.

Currently, Mr. Truc’s farm has 25 cows, including 10 breeding cows; about 150 pigs and more than 100 chickens. Each year, this integrated farming model brings in hundreds of millions of dong for Mr. Truc’s family.

In addition to developing the family economy, Mr. Truc is also the Head of the local Fattening Cattle Breeding Association. He actively participates in the activities and movements proposed by the association. For many years, Mr. Truc has been honored to be recognized as a good farmer and businessman and has been commended and rewarded by the district and commune.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hanh Thuan Commune, Nguyen Minh, assessed that the integrated livestock farm model of Mr. Tran Van Truc is the most effective livestock farming model in the locality. In the coming time, the commune will continue to promote for other members to visit and learn from the experiences of households with effective livestock and crop farming models to develop the economy together and strive to become rich.
