Vozinha became a global phenomenon overnight at the World Cup. |
In their opening match of Group H against the top title contender on the night of June 15th, Cape Verde were considered the underdogs compared to Spain. However, the African team made their opponents endure a difficult 90 minutes and held them to a 0-0 draw thanks to a brilliant performance from Vozinha.
The goalkeeper, who plays for Chaves in the Portuguese Second Division, repeatedly denied dangerous opportunities from the Spanish strikers. His outstanding saves repeatedly frustrated the Spanish attack, keeping Cape Verde's hopes of securing a point alive until the very last minutes.
That performance earned Vozinha the Man of the Match award. According to performance ratings, he achieved a score close to 9/10, the highest on the field.
After the match, the 40-year-old goalkeeper proudly said: "We worked very hard to get here. We knew we were up against one of the strongest teams in the world , but we also understood our own worth. This is a special day and we are very happy."
What makes Vozinha's story even more remarkable is that his transfer value was only around 50,000 euros. This figure is equivalent to 1/1,000 of the most recent transfers in Spain, when Real Madrid spent 50 million euros plus add-ons to sign Marc Cucurella.
Vozinha also created a social media sensation. Before the match against Spain, his Instagram account had only about 20,000 followers. However, a few hours after his heroic performance, that number surpassed 1.5 million, more than three times the population of Cape Verde.
