Nguyen Thi Oanh sets a national marathon record.

Known for her strength in middle-distance races, Nguyen Thi Oanh has recently begun to challenge herself more in longer distances. The athlete, born in 1993, decided to participate in the longest distance (42 km) of the Viettel Marathon Hanoi 2024 – the second leg of a series of races held in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The SEA Games champion in the 1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase, and 5,000m races also set a new national marathon record.

This tournament is coordinated by the Vietnam Athletics Federation, with the Asian Athletics Federation providing professional supervision and advice. The race route differs from most marathon events in that it heads towards the suburbs instead of the city center, with a clear course to avoid traffic congestion and disruption to people's lives.

In the 42.194 km men's race, record holder Hoang Nguyen Thanh and his senior teammate Nguyen Van Lai engaged in a dramatic battle right from the first few kilometers to the finish line at My Dinh Stadium.

Ultimately, Nguyen Thanh overtook his seniors in the final kilometers to cross the finish line first, becoming the champion of the race with a time of 2 hours 28 minutes and 21 seconds. Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Lai also performed excellently, finishing just one second behind his younger teammate.

Immediately following the dramatic competition mentioned above, the women's full marathon witnessed Nguyen Thi Oanh breaking the national record. Last September, Nguyen Thi Oanh conquered the international marathon in Hanoi with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 20 seconds despite heavy rain, thereby setting a new national record.

Oanh "In" broke the previous record of 2 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds set by Hoang Ngoc Hoa at the Hong Kong International Marathon in early 2024. And this morning, once again, Nguyen Thi Oanh surpassed Ngoc Hoa to claim victory on the track. Athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh finished with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 49 seconds, while Ngoc Hoa achieved a time of 2 hours 47 minutes 42 seconds.
