Houses cracked due to drainage project construction.

In Binh Duong, more than a dozen households in Phu Cuong ward are living in anxiety because their house walls are cracking, tilting, and could collapse at any time due to the impact of drainage construction.

The project to renovate Thầy Năng canal, from the intersection of Thích Quảng Đức road to Bà Hên bridge (Cách Mạng Tháng Tám road) and the stone-built canal along Thích Quảng Đức road, has a total investment of over 172 billion VND. The project will drain water from a catchment area of approximately 435 hectares; create a landscape and improve urban planning in Thủ Dầu Một city.

Over the past few days, the construction unit has mobilized many machines to drive piles, build embankments, and construct a drainage system. However, the excavation process has caused cracks and subsidence in the walls of more than 10 houses belonging to households along the canal.

Pointing to her dilapidated house, 59-year-old Vo Thi Dao said that since the drainage system was built, the lower part of her house began to crack, and then the walls crumbled, making her afraid to go in or out. "I'm very scared because the house could collapse at any time. I request that the authorities work with the investor to compensate the residents," Ms. Dao said.

Next to Mrs. Dao's house, more than 10 other households are experiencing similar problems. In some cases, cracks have split the walls of two adjacent houses in two. Furthermore, the fence gates and house doors cannot be closed tightly because the walls are misaligned.

Mr. Tran Tan Phi Hung, Head of Ward 2, said that the project's investor had come to inspect the damage and asked households with cracked walls to take photos, but there has been no response so far. "Most of the affected households are in difficult circumstances, mostly factory workers, and with Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, they don't know what to do," Mr. Hung said.

Mr. Vu Tien Son, Director of the Project Management Board for Agriculture and Rural Development in Binh Duong province, said that some houses cracked due to the process of removing steel piles, causing the ground to become unstable and vibrate, leading to cracks. According to reports, 14 households were affected, many of whose houses, built many years ago, suffered significant damage. "We are coordinating with the construction insurance company to provide compensation to the residents," he said.

According to Tran Si Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thu Dau Mot City, the city has sent officials to record the incident. The authorities will work with the investor to agree on a solution to rectify the situation. "The construction project is quite complex, so the city will supervise the implementation process to ensure that it does not affect the daily lives of the people," Mr. Nam said.
