Scaling up economic models

To facilitate the development and replication of highly effective economic models, specialized agencies of Yen Lap district and organizations such as the Farmers' Association, Women's Association, Veterans' Association, and Youth Union have helped members access loans, learn from experience, and build production linkages. This has fostered self-reliance, initiative, and a sense of striving for improvement, avoiding a dependent mindset and helping poor and near-poor households achieve sustainable poverty alleviation.

Thanks to the widespread adoption of cinnamon cultivation, hundreds of households in Trung Son and Thuong Long communes of Yen Lap district have escaped poverty sustainably.

In Thuong Long commune, Yen Lap district, when asking about households that have become millionaires from cinnamon cultivation, almost everyone in the commune speaks highly of Mrs. Trieu Thi Van's family. Originally a poor household in the commune, since the late 1990s, after being introduced to cinnamon cultivation, her family boldly borrowed capital to invest in planting cinnamon and learned the trade of seedling propagation, supplying seedlings to households in need in the locality. Thanks to cinnamon, Mrs. Van's family earns over 1.4 billion VND per year, creating stable jobs for 15 local workers with an income of about 7.5 million VND per person per month.

Ms. Van shared: “My family cultivates 12 hectares of cinnamon, of which 8 hectares are already producing fruit. In addition, I also grow and sell cinnamon seedlings, averaging about 800,000 seedlings per year, and purchase and process cinnamon products such as branches, bark, and leaves. Cinnamon trees yield significantly higher economic returns than other crops. I and many other cinnamon growers in the commune are willing to share our experience with others, following the principle that those who planted earlier provide seedlings and technical support to those who plant later, in order to expand the planting area and help disadvantaged households in the commune escape poverty.”

Pomelo trees have now become one of the main crops in several communes such as Xuan Vien, Xuan Thuy, Phuc Khanh, Dong Thinh, Hung Long... As one of the first households to bring Dien pomelo trees to the fields of Xuan Thuy more than 20 years ago, Mr. Nguyen Van Nen's family's pomelo orchard now generates revenue of over 500 million VND per year.

Besides grapefruit trees, his family has also developed a comprehensive VAC (Garden-Pond-Livestock) economic model, with an average total family revenue of over 1.6 billion VND per year. Inspired by Mr. Nên's model of grapefruit cultivation combined with livestock farming, many households in and outside Xuân Thủy commune have boldly learned from and invested in similar ventures, achieving high economic efficiency.

In addition to the above models, Yen Lap district has also successfully developed many models for raising commercial chickens, pigs, and goats; raising sturgeon and koi fish, etc., which have been widely replicated and applied, helping ethnic minorities in the district achieve sustainable poverty reduction.

Ms. Dinh Thi Thuy Huong, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Yen Lap district, said: The department actively advises the district on policies to encourage the development of effective economic models suitable to the local reality, and to replicate them on a large scale; encouraging households producing the same product to establish cooperatives to exchange experiences, techniques, and product consumption. In the coming time, Yen Lap district will focus on strengthening linkages and cooperation between cooperatives and other economic sectors to apply scientific and technological advancements, consume agricultural products and local specialties, and enhance the competitiveness of these entities.
