Examples include creating recycled libraries in schoolyards, holding online book reviews, and offering prizes for reading books. These approaches are creating positive changes.

I absolutely love reading, especially in colorful, outdoor library spaces.

The bookshelves are named "Happiness".

During recess, Hai Chau, a student in class 3/2 at Nui Thanh Primary School (Hai Chau district, Da Nang), and her group of friends rushed out to a courtyard on the side of the school. Excitedly choosing her favorite book from the shelf on the wall, Hai Chau sat down and read intently with her friends.

"I absolutely love reading, and I especially enjoy reading in colorful, outdoor library spaces like this," said Hai Chau.

The library that Hai Chau described simply uses brightly painted wheels assembled into seats. Students sit beside planters, under the cool shade of leaves, freely choosing books from shelves and cabinets recycled from old corrugated iron and wooden planks.

That library has attracted countless generations of students from Nui Thanh Primary School over the years.

This unique library, conceived by the school's teachers, is called "Happiness." It's not just books; the walls, once covered in moss, have been transformed into folk art paintings, and the corners are decorated with vibrant potted plants made from recycled materials.

According to the school's teachers, the "Happy Library" not only encourages students to read but also fosters a love for plants and trees, and an appreciation for natural values and traditions.

At Le Dinh Chinh Primary School (Hai Chau district), bookshelves have been placed in the corner of each classroom. Ms. Huynh Thi Thu Nguyet, the school principal, said: "Each classroom will have a bookshelf named 'Happiness.' There, students can exchange their favorite books with their classmates. Parents also contribute good books for their children."

In addition, teachers at Le Dinh Chinh Primary School often organize many reading sessions to attract students' passion for books. In the principal's New Year's greeting letter to the students, Ms. Nguyet did not forget to remind them to read a good book during their free time away from school and friends.

Parents accompany their children.

At Luong The Vinh Primary School (Son Tra district), there is a movement that attracts not only students but also parents to participate, called "Behind every child's success is the shadow of their parents."

Accordingly, through the Facebook group created by the school, parents will record and upload videos of their children introducing themselves, sharing, and reading their favorite books. Some parents even read books with their children and post these adorable moments.

According to Ms. Vo Thi My Thu, the school principal, this movement not only creates more enthusiasm for reading among students but also develops their skills.

Ms. Thu said that initially, they only hoped each student would upload 1-2 videos per week. But the results surprised the teachers and parents when, after only six months of launching the initiative, more than 500 parents participated out of a total of 740 students in the entire school.

The number of uploaded videos has steadily increased, reaching thousands. Some parents have posted over 1,500 videos, demonstrating the large number of books their children have read.

"After more than six months of launching the campaign, I've noticed that students are going to the library more often. The videos posted by parents show that the children are reading books anytime, anywhere, and even those with weak reading skills have improved significantly."

"Many children with symptoms of autism or ADHD also participate in reading, and parents accompany their children and report that these children's conditions have improved significantly thanks to reading," Ms. Thu shared.

In addition, the school also gives gifts to students who read a lot and produce high-quality reading material each month. These students receive rewards such as books, reading culture ambassador badges, or trips to off-campus libraries… to encourage them to read.

Ms. Hai Yen, a parent with a child in 4th grade at Luong The Vinh Primary School, said: "It was surprising how much more confident my child became after a few reading videos. Initially, parents helped with filming, but later the child took the initiative to position the camera for the best angle. The way she introduced herself and the topic of the book she was going to read also became much more confident and outgoing."

Ms. Yen and many other parents also said that this activity helps children limit their time on phones, TV, and playing games after school. Instead, they enthusiastically ask their parents to turn on the video recorder so they can participate with their friends while reading.

The bookshelf in the schoolyard

At Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Hai Chau district), open bookshelves are also placed in the schoolyard and corridors so that students can conveniently read at any time. The bookshelves are regularly updated with new books, which makes the students enthusiastic.

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Loan, the school's vice principal, said: "In addition to the open bookshelf, the school has also arranged a clean and beautiful reading area in the library with air conditioning to encourage students to read during break time. The school also has activities introducing good books during flag-raising ceremonies so that students can find and read them in the library. Occasionally, there will be book fairs showcasing, exchanging, and donating used books. Students who read many books and bring books to donate also receive gifts in the form of raffle tickets to win books."
