Many opportunities for versatile actors.

Stage actors today are different from those of the past; they not only need good acting and dialogue skills but also need to possess many other skills to be able to appear in diverse performances.

Anyone who has seen many plays at Quoc Thao Theatre (Ho Chi Minh City) such as "The Mask," "The Dreamers," "The Colorful Island ," etc., will see that the young actors have interesting performances with very difficult physical techniques, accompanied by dancing, acrobatics, and contortions no less impressive than circus performers.

TO RETAIN AUDIENCE, YOU NEED TO BE VERSATILE.

These techniques were thoroughly taught to the students by "teacher" Quoc Thao. Actor Bao Minh, a student of Quoc Thao, said: "Although we only studied in short courses, the teacher still made us learn all the subjects so that we could take on many different types of plays later. Especially the subjects related to physical performance; if any of us had vertigo or dizziness, we would find it daunting, but most students enjoyed practicing difficult pieces. In addition, we also had to learn folk songs, chants, and traditional Vietnamese opera... In the play ' Waiting ,' I was able to sing the song 'Ly Son Sat' thanks to this training, because before that I didn't know how to sing traditional music."

Huong Mi, a graduate of this school and a former contestant in the Miss Tourism Ho Chi Minh City pageant, said: "Back in class, Mr. Quoc Thao designed a catwalk course, so when I competed in the beauty pageant, I learned much faster than other beginners. This course really helped make my body more flexible and graceful, greatly assisting my acting. And if you want to be a model, you can use it right away."

Director Bui Quoc Bao also affirmed that audiences now not only want to watch plays in a purely theatrical way, but they also like plays that combine other art forms, such as circus, dance, and music… "Too many forms of entertainment are competing, the theater must be versatile to retain its audience. Young people have the advantage of being trained in many skills and having flexible bodies, so they can train better. Nothing will be superfluous, because they will be exposed to musical theater and circus theater, which are also burgeoning trends."

V. In a more engaging performance

Artist Dinh Toan can be said to be one of the few extremely versatile actors from over 20 years ago. He was involved in activities at the District 1 Children's House (Ho Chi Minh City) from a young age, studying many disciplines such as ballet, aerobics, mime, drama, dance, puppetry, singing, and later self-taught circus arts, becoming so skilled that his instructor suggested he pursue a career in circus arts. However, Dinh Toan chose to focus on drama, and he brought all those diverse skills to plays at the IDECAF theater (Ho Chi Minh City). In plays like "The Jungle Book," "The Monkey King's Battle with the Red Child," and "The Monkey King's Havoc in Heaven ," Dinh Toan nimbly climbed trees and performed spectacular acrobatics on horseback. And in "The Adventures of Captain Sinbad ," the audience held their breath as they watched Dinh Toan climb onto a huge sail made of netting, swaying back and forth in a truly dangerous manner. He said, "Having many skills as an actor is very advantageous. For example, if you know music , your body will 'catch' the rhythm very quickly and your performance will be more lively. Even traditional music is needed, from cải lương (Vietnamese opera) and điệu lý (folk songs) to hồ quảng (a type of Vietnamese opera). For example, in the play Sinbad, the actors could sing hồ quảng, and they also did various movements, and the audience applauded enthusiastically. We added all sorts of things to the play like spices, making the dish more appealing."

Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc and Meritorious Artist My Duyen are very skilled ballet dancers, so the musical " Believe in Roses," in which they participated, became as beautiful as a poem with incredibly graceful dance performances. Artist Hong Anh also shared that although she came from a film background, when she joined the IDECAF theater, she had to practice singing and dancing a lot to perform in musicals, especially children's plays, where singing and dancing must be even more vibrant and energetic.

Over a decade ago in Ho Chi Minh City, two young "producers," director Khac Duy and artist Hoang Quan, established the Buffalo theater. It was a true musical theater with dozens of young, passionate individuals who breathed new life into the theater scene. These actors, in their twenties, were full of energy, skilled in singing and dancing, and possessed sincere, innocent acting styles. They debuted in a series of plays such as Chicago, High School, The Dancer, and Tam Cam , all of which made a strong impression. Unfortunately, these young people lacked strong support; even the performance venues weren't stable, so they struggled to survive and eventually stopped. However, with their diverse skills, these young people, no matter where they went, could still pursue artistic careers, and some even achieved fame. Clearly, versatility is never a bad thing.
