Recently, the online travel platform Agoda ranked Nha Trang as Vietnam's number one "slow travel" destination, alongside Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea), and Chiang Mai (Thailand). Mr. Vu Ngoc Lam, Director of Agoda Vietnam, stated that the combination of stunning scenery with a slow pace of life and friendly, open-minded people makes Nha Trang an ideal destination for those who want to explore the depths of this region. Prior to this, in 2024, the American magazine Travel + Leisure selected Nha Trang as one of the 8 best beach resorts in the world for retirees. The magazine highly praised Nha Trang for its beautiful beaches, high-quality healthcare system with modern facilities and English-speaking staff, and a stable expatriate community of approximately 4,000 people. These accolades are not accidental but accurately reflect what Khanh Hoa truly possesses: a land with the natural, cultural, and infrastructure conditions to become a world-class "slow tourism" destination.
Khanh Hoa boasts a rare array of tourism resources. To the east lies a long coastline with sheltered bays and pristine white sand beaches in Nha Trang, Bai Dai, Vinh Hy, Binh Tien, Ninh Chu, Ninh Van, and more. Along with its natural beauty, Khanh Hoa also possesses a rich cultural heritage. These include traditional Cham cultural heritage sites with ancient temples and towers, and fishing villages like Vinh Luong, Bich Dam, and Ninh Van that have maintained the rhythm of fishing life for generations. In the highlands of Khanh Son, Khanh Vinh, and Bac Ai, the Raglai people still preserve the sounds of stone xylophones and chapi instruments, as well as other traditional cultural features with great potential for community tourism that have yet to be fully exploited. Khanh Hoa's cuisine also has its own unique characteristics, with famous dishes such as fish noodle soup, banh can (rice pancake), Ninh Hoa grilled spring rolls, and lobster, attracting tourists who enjoy exploring culinary delights .

But what gives Khanh Hoa a strong competitive advantage in the high-end "slow tourism" segment is its system of world-class resorts. Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, nestled in a bay accessible only by speedboat, has long been ranked as one of the best resorts in Southeast Asia. Amanoi, situated on a hilltop in Nui Chua National Park overlooking the clear blue bay, has long been a sought-after destination for the elite. In the Bai Dai area (Cam Lam), resorts like The Anam Cam Ranh, Ana Mandara Cam Ranh, and Radisson Blu resort Cam Ranh create a continuous strip of high-end resorts, capable of keeping international tourists for days at a time. This is the infrastructure that many Asian destinations aspire to develop "slow tourism" but lack.

Transforming potential into strategy
According to many tourism experts, Khanh Hoa is facing a rare opportunity to attract tourists who enjoy "slow tourism." Ms. Huynh Phan Phuong Hoang, Deputy General Director of Vietravel, highly appreciates the favorable conditions for developing the "slow tourism" model in Khanh Hoa. Anticipating this trend, Vietravel has developed a new generation of tourism products, integrating ESG (environmentally and socially responsible tourism) and LEI (Leadership, Emphasizing the experiential value and emotional depth of tourists). Many of these products are designed to explore the nature, culture, and unique local values of Khanh Hoa, contributing to more authentic and sustainable experiences for tourists.

According to Ms. Huynh Phan Phuong Hoang, "slow tourism" not only helps tourists recharge their energy but also extends their stay, increases spending, and motivates local communities to preserve their cultural identity. To lay the foundation for the development of "slow tourism," Khanh Hoa needs to pay special attention to destination management, building green spaces and a friendly tourism environment; developing appropriate plans to create differentiation and prevent the copying of models between destinations; and encouraging local communities to participate more deeply in the tourism value chain. These are crucial factors in forming a unique identity, enhancing the quality of the experience, and increasing Khanh Hoa's long-term attractiveness.
Similarly, Dr. Pham Ha - Chairman and CEO of Lux Group - emphasized: In the context of global competition, the advantage of low prices will gradually disappear, and destinations that can tell stories, create experiences, and preserve cultural and natural values will have sustainable appeal. Khanh Hoa currently has the foundation to develop tourism in this direction. To retain tourists, Khanh Hoa's tourism industry needs to urgently build in-depth experiences: local culinary classes, tours exploring and experiencing Cham culture, tours visiting fishing villages and learning about the lives of fishermen, mountain climbing or trekking tours through the forest... In particular, many experts assess the southern part of the province as an ideal "slow travel" space with much potential, suitable for long-term stays connected with community life in the true spirit of slow travel.

The world has recognized the potential of "slow tourism" in Khanh Hoa province, and the remaining challenge lies in the actions taken by the Khanh Hoa tourism industry to develop a truly valuable and sustainable tourism sector. Tourism experts also note that pursuing "slow tourism" requires a new set of measurement indicators: average length of stay, average spending per visitor, return rate, and local community satisfaction index. "Encouragingly, the Khanh Hoa tourism industry has gradually focused more on the quality of visitors rather than just the quantity. Evidence of this is the recent survey and assessment by the Khanh Hoa Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the rate and data of returning tourists...", Dr. Pham Ha stated.
