The market is bustling
Hai Duong has typical fruit and vegetable growing areas in Thanh Ha, Gia Loc, Tu Ky districts, Chi Linh city... Therefore, choosing good seedlings is very important to create the brand and value of Hai Duong agricultural products.
The province itself is home to the Institute of Food Crops and Vegetables, part of the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ). Hai Duong province was the first place where the results of hybridization and development of plant varieties from this institute were applied.
Every spring, the buying and selling of saplings in the province becomes even more vibrant.
Right at the entrance to the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants is a nursery stocked with all kinds of trees, from fruit trees and ornamental plants to shade trees. Vendors at the nursery say that demand for seedlings increases by 50-70% in the spring compared to other seasons because this is when localities launch the Tree Planting Festival. Spring weather is also favorable for the growth and development of trees, so many people plant trees in their home gardens and fields.
Mr. To Van Lam from Kien Phuc commune (Ninh Giang district) came all the way here to buy 30 Areca palm saplings to plant in his garden. Mr. Lam said: "I usually buy seedlings from the Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants because I am confident about the quality, the varieties are good, they are less susceptible to pests and diseases, and the sellers provide specific advice and guidance on the planting and care process."
Phu Tinh village in Thanh Quang commune (Thanh Ha district) has a famous tradition of cultivating and selling saplings. These days, the road leading into the village is bustling with trucks and motorbikes coming and going. These vehicles transport saplings from Phu Tinh to planting areas not only within the district but also to neighboring provinces such as Hai Phong , Quang Ninh, and Hung Yen…
In the lush green nurseries, staff and owners excitedly and busily transplant seedlings into trucks for customers. Phu Tinh village has dozens of households that have been selling seedlings for many years. Each nursery has a large selection of seedlings, from flowers and ornamental plants to fruit trees and shade trees.
For many years, every spring, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mien from My Duc commune, An Lao district (Hai Phong) has come to Phu Tinh village to buy saplings to resell to local people. Some days, Ms. Mien imports several hundred, even thousands of saplings. According to Ms. Mien, the saplings from Phu Tinh village are diverse, of good quality, and thrive well. This place has become a trusted source for those in the sapling business.
Many new plant varieties

During this period, customers mainly purchased various types of fruit trees and shade trees. Despite the strong increase in demand, the prices of many types of seedlings remained stable with little fluctuation. Each pomelo tree cost from 30,000 to 40,000 VND, sapodilla from 20,000 to 30,000 VND, lemon from 20,000 to 40,000 VND, guava from 40,000 to 50,000 VND, and star apple from 50,000 to 150,000 VND depending on height.
Besides traditional varieties, several new plant varieties have recently appeared on the market. The Center for Experimental Food Crops and Food Plants (Institute of Food Crops and Food Plants) has supplied the market with new plant varieties such as chocolate persimmon, Thai custard apple, Indonesian red jackfruit, Taiwanese pear apple, Thai tamarind, four-season tree grape… with many outstanding advantages such as good pest and disease resistance, high yield, and are favored by many people. The price of these varieties ranges from 80,000 to 200,000 VND per plant.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, owner of Hanh Nghia nursery, who has been selling seedlings in Phu Tinh village for over 20 years, said: “Identifying the right variety is crucial, so the process of growing and caring for seedlings requires meticulous attention to detail at every stage, from preparing the soil and potting the seedlings to selecting good seeds, watering them to maintain moisture for germination and growth into seedlings. Besides growing our own seedlings, we also import many types of seedlings from the Central and Southern regions to meet the diverse needs of the people. Currently, we sell from several hundred to thousands of seedlings every day. Nursery owners must constantly learn about new plant varieties, improve their knowledge of care processes, and understand the growth characteristics of various plants in order to advise and guide customers effectively.”

Besides some traditional fruit tree varieties such as pomelo, orange, and longan, in recent years, many gardeners in Phu Tinh village have also cultivated new varieties such as mango, sapodilla, jackfruit, and star apple... These new varieties have enriched and diversified the range of crops to meet the needs of the people. The introduction of new, high-quality crop varieties has contributed to increased crop yields and economic efficiency.
