Who should avoid eating pineapple?

VnExpressVnExpress29/05/2023

People with diabetes, stomach problems, or those taking antibiotics, anticoagulants, or depression should limit their pineapple consumption due to potential side effects from the substances in the fruit.

On May 29th, Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, from the Traditional Medicine Department of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, stated that pineapple is a tropical fruit rich in vitamins, enzymes, and antioxidants, providing ample nutrition. Furthermore, pineapple helps boost the immune system and treat indigestion.

However, when eating pineapple, people need to remove all the eyes, as this part contains certain fungi such as Candida, which can easily cause food poisoning if ingested. Pineapple also contains high levels of carbohydrates and sugar, so people with diabetes need to be cautious.

Additionally, consuming too much vitamin C from pineapple can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or heartburn. Pineapple is acidic, and drinking too much can lead to tooth decay.

Some people may experience a burning or burning sensation in their mouth, lips, or tongue after drinking pineapple juice; this is a side effect caused by the enzyme bromelain. Extremely high levels of bromelain can also cause skin rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

People taking antibiotics, anticoagulants, blood thinners, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and antidepressants should avoid eating too much pineapple. Bromelain can inhibit platelets in the blood, increasing the risk of excessive bleeding. Therefore, you should avoid using bromelain before and after surgery. Consult with your doctor or nutritionist for specific advice.

Eating unripe pineapple can cause food poisoning, leading to severe diarrhea and vomiting. Additionally, the core of the pineapple should be avoided, as the fibrous strands can obstruct the digestive system and cause bloating and gas.

Pineapples contain many organic acids and the enzyme bromelain, which helps break down proteins. This is not beneficial for people with stomach problems, as it can worsen inflammation and ulcers in the stomach lining. If eaten on an empty stomach, the organic acids and bromelain can irritate the stomach and intestinal lining, causing nausea and discomfort.
