Besides affordable furniture sets, the Dong Ky woodcraft village (Tu Son City) also boasts exquisitely carved wooden furniture sets worth billions of dong.
Dong Ky village is famous far and wide for its production of fine wood handicrafts. Currently, the craft village has more than 400 companies and cooperatives. The handcrafted wooden products of Dong Ky village currently serve mainly the Chinese market, the domestic market, and some other countries with similar East Asian customs. Thanks to the development of fine woodworking, this village is transforming day by day, earning the nickname "village of millionaires" due to its high income. According to statistics, approximately one in ten households in the craft village is the director of a company or factory. Mr. Nguyen Duy Toan, director of Toan Loc Cooperative, said that last year, the craft village began to restore production after being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the recovery process was not easy as raw material prices increased, and finding markets for high-value products proved difficult. Many households in the craft village expressed their desire for support in promoting and finding markets for their products. Handicraft wood products from the craft village have a wide range of prices, from tens of millions of dong to billions, and even tens of billions of dong. A set of exquisitely carved wooden furniture, made from wood imported from South Africa and valued at billions of dong, is on display at a booth in Dong Ky craft village. Another set of furniture worth billions of dong is on display at the craft village. According to the sculptors, a product like this, with thousands of details, patterns, and shapes, not only requires meticulousness and high precision, but more importantly, the carver must possess aesthetic sense, talent, and years of accumulated experience. According to the owner, these high-end products are suitable for both functional and decorative purposes in villas, castles, penthouses, hotels, and especially buildings with a classic French architectural style.
In recent days, images of the all-wood Dong Ky seating in the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater have circulated on social media, sparking controversy. Some argue that the use of entirely wooden seating is incompatible with the general design style of modern theaters and is wasteful. According to the Bac Ninh Urban Development Area Management Board – the investor of the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater – the total cost for the seating in the theater was 6.3 billion VND, including 341 chairs and 185 tables. At the recently concluded 15th National Architecture Awards (2022-2023), the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater was awarded the Silver Prize in the Public Architecture category. According to the judging panel of the 15th National Architecture Award: "The architecture of the Quan Ho Folk Song Theater is creative and impressive. In terms of space: it uses simple yet sophisticated materials and colors, drawing inspiration from traditional Vietnamese patterns and motifs."
