Significant progress has been made.

From a number of small-scale traditional industries, Binh Thuan's industry has shown remarkable progress and is gradually establishing itself as one of the three pillars of the local economy

After the complete liberation of South Vietnam and the reunification of the country (1975), the province recorded approximately 500 industrial and handicraft production facilities, mainly concentrated in traditional trades: fish sauce production, ice production, wood sawing, shipbuilding and repair, and automobile repair. However, at that time, most of these facilities operated on a family scale, passed down from father to son, using outdated equipment and attracting few workers. Furthermore, electricity production faced even greater difficulties due to the economic blockade and embargo, resulting in insufficient electricity supply to meet the needs of production and daily life.

Binh Thuan has great potential and advantages for developing the energy industry, especially clean energy (illustrative image).

Since the province's separation in 1992, Binh Thuan's industrial sector has received focused investment and development to effectively exploit the potential and advantages of this southern coastal province of Central Vietnam. Simultaneously, the Provincial Party Committee has issued specialized resolutions on industrial and handicraft development (now industrial development), guiding the sector's strong growth. Accordingly, the internal structure of the industry has shifted positively, especially with a rapid increase in the proportion of electricity production and the processing and manufacturing industry holding a leading position in the local industry. Besides processing agricultural and seafood products, the local industry has also developed several new products: decorative wooden furniture, high-quality adhesive paper, garments, and titanium mineral processing…

Industrial parks in Binh Thuan have attracted dozens of investment projects that have gone into production and business (Illustrative image).

Over the past period, nine industrial parks (IPs) have been established in the province, and seven of them are currently undergoing investment promotion and infrastructure development. These include: Phan Thiet Industrial Park Phase 1, Phan Thiet Industrial Park Phase 2, Ham Kiem I Industrial Park, Ham Kiem II Industrial Park, Song Binh Industrial Park, Tuy Phong Industrial Park, and Tan Duc Industrial Park. The remaining Son My 1 and Son My 2 Industrial Parks are in the investment preparation phase, undergoing compensation and land clearance procedures, and land lease processes. By the end of last year, the industrial parks with completed infrastructure had attracted 89 secondary projects with a total registered capital of nearly VND 16,825 billion and over USD 293 million, of which 65 projects have commenced production and business operations, creating jobs for more than 10,000 workers. This doesn't even include the three projects (thermal power plant and LNG terminal) in Son My 1 Industrial Park with a total registered capital of up to $5.4 billion that have received investment approval but have not yet been granted land leases. In addition, the 15 industrial clusters that have invested in and are currently developing infrastructure in the locality have attracted nearly 180 projects to date, contributing to job creation for approximately 13,000 workers.

Particularly in the energy sector, while in 1992 less than half of the communes, wards, and towns in the province, with only 35% of households having access to electricity, Binh Thuan has now shown the potential of a national-level energy center. According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the province currently has 47 power plants in operation, including 4 thermal power plants, 7 hydropower plants, 1 diesel power plant, 9 wind power plants, and 26 solar power plants, with a total capacity of 6,523.21 MW. Thanks to this, Binh Thuan not only provides sufficient electricity to serve socio-economic development in the locality (including Phu Quy island district) but also contributes to ensuring energy security for the Southern key economic region…

With strong progress, Binh Thuan's industry is also aiming to become a pillar and a crucial driving force for sustainable economic development, as expected by the locality. It is believed that in the coming time, this economic pillar will continue to achieve new successes, especially in promising areas such as: processing and manufacturing industries; energy and electricity industries (onshore wind power, offshore wind power and hydrogen, solar power, LNG power...).
