The service industry is booming, and job opportunities are expanding.
On Saturday evening, the atmosphere in the financial skills class at Top Olympia Business School, Da Nang branch, was lively. More than 10 young students debated sustainable personal financial investment models. VMH (25 years old), an employee of Saigon - Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank Finance Company Limited (SHBFinance), said that with Da Nang aiming to become a financial center, job opportunities have increased significantly. "I have to learn more to avoid falling behind and to have more opportunities for new jobs," Hai said.
H. is one of many young people who take advantage of evenings to learn digital skills, data analysis, financial management, etc., in order to keep up with the city's new pace of development. As a result, language centers, co-working spaces, and skills training classes around the Son Tra and Hai Chau areas are more crowded than before.
“The learning atmosphere is as vibrant as it was during the early days of Da Nang's information technology boom,” assessed Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Gia Nhu, Rector of the School of Technology (Duy Tan University). According to him, most young people now clearly understand that to have opportunities to work in international financial centers, foreign businesses, or free trade zones, they must possess financial skills, knowledge of digital transformation, and a global mindset. This also presents an opportunity for universities and colleges to change their training methods to better suit practical needs.
At Duy Tan University, the Financial Investment major within the Faculty of Economics and Finance is attracting an increasing number of students. Many students say that since the city set a goal of developing high-quality financial services, job opportunities in this field have become clearer.
"Previously, finance students mainly aimed for careers in banking or corporate accounting. Now, the demand for personnel in digital financial institutions, fund management companies, and fintech businesses is rapidly increasing. Young people see a much broader career future," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Gia Nhu commented.
Not only young people, but also the people of Da Nang are changing their approach to finance towards a more modern direction. Cashless payments have become common even among older small business owners. Ms. Tran Thi Mai (72 years old), a vendor at An Hai Bac market, said that this year, the number of customers paying via QR code has tripled. "Before, I only accepted cash, but now many people transfer money or use e-wallets. I also have to learn to keep up, otherwise I'll easily lose customers," Ms. Mai smiled.
In addition, online savings models, small-scale investments based on automated analysis, and expense management via mobile applications have become more familiar as banks and financial institutions continuously offer promotional policies or competitive interest rates. Nguyen Van Luong, a ride-hailing driver, shared: “I’m investing 50,000 VND daily in an online savings package introduced by the bank. At first, I did it just for fun, but later I found it quite useful as it easily creates a saving habit. Looking back at the small amount I’ve accumulated each month makes me feel more secure,” Luong said.
New economic space
Many people view the construction of the Vietnam International Financial Centre (VIFC) as a symbol of the transformation in Da Nang's economic development thinking. In particular, within a short period, Da Nang has implemented a series of international exchange programs and workshops to solicit input from experts.
Many major investors such as Terne Holding, Trump Organization, Makara Capital, etc., have expressed interest in financial projects, financial support services, and free trade. According to the Department of Finance, many international expert delegations visiting Da Nang have assessed the city as having "great development potential" thanks to its digital infrastructure, young workforce, and dynamic government.
The new economic space is becoming clearer every day. In the Son Tra coastal area or along the Vo Nguyen Giap - Nguyen Van Thoai road axis, the number of foreign experts and engineers living there has increased significantly. This has led to the development of satellite services such as imported food stores, health care centers, flexible working model coffee shop chains, accounting and legal services for startups, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Director of Toan Huy Hoang Real Estate Company Limited, commented that the recent influx of experts and high-quality human resources has created significant changes in urban consumption. “They need standard workplaces, convenient housing, fast and efficient financial services, and a multilingual living environment. Da Nang is on the right track by focusing on high-value service industries instead of relying solely on tourism or light industry,” Mr. Toan said.
According to Professor Tran Dinh Thien, Member of the Prime Minister's Policy Advisory Council and Chairman of the VIFC Construction Advisory Council, the trend of shifting the economic structure towards high-quality trade and services will lead to a strong restructuring of urban space. Many streets could become financial and commercial service zones with the presence of international offices, data analysis centers, fintech complexes, and legal, auditing, and tax consulting firms. This will help urban residents increase their income from rental properties and simultaneously stimulate the development of other services.
Professor Tran Dinh Thien also noted that when the city aims to build an international financial center, the movement will not stop at the macro level but will directly affect urban life. People will be forced to change their mindset regarding consumption, saving, and investment, while businesses must improve their competitiveness, and management agencies need to proactively improve infrastructure and the legal framework in a quick, efficient, and effective manner.
