Science connects heartbeats
With over two decades dedicated to interventional cardiology, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine, Meritorious Physician Ho Anh Binh, Director of the Cardiovascular Center, is not only known for directly performing thousands of complex cardiovascular interventions each year, but also as a scientist who always places research as the foundation for professional development.
As Director of the Cardiovascular Center at Hue Central Hospital, he and his team developed and advanced techniques in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, organ transplantation, and modern internal medicine. He also directly performed approximately 2,000-2,500 interventions annually, using many specialized techniques such as complex coronary artery intervention, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), Rotablator, intravascular calcification (IVL), aortic intervention with stent graft, Hybrid technique, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI), and congenital heart disease intervention.
A notable achievement was in 2023, following a successful cross-Vietnam heart transplant from a brain-dead donor, when the Cardiovascular Center received a commendation from the Ministry of Health , marking a significant milestone affirming the professional capabilities of Hue's medical field.
For Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine, and Meritorious Physician Ho Anh Binh, advanced technology is not the ultimate goal. What he is more concerned about is how to transform clinical experience into scientific knowledge to serve the community. Over the years, he has devoted much effort to research in cardiovascular internal medicine, aiming at early detection of risk factors and improving treatment prognoses for patients. To date, he has published more than 50 scientific articles domestically and 10 internationally in ISI/Scopus indexed articles; he has led many research projects on coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, peripheral vascular intervention, etc.
Beyond research, he also participated in compiling monographs on interventional cardiology, actively trained, transferred technology, and connected professionals with experts both domestically and internationally.
Elevating Hue Ophthalmology to Regional Standard
With nearly 30 years in the profession, Dr. Duong Anh Quan, Director of the Eye Center, has left his mark on Hue's ophthalmology department by bringing it closer to advanced techniques, giving many patients the chance to regain their sight.
As Director of the Eye Center at Hue Central Hospital from 2021 to 2025, he and his team implemented many new techniques in ophthalmology treatment such as retinal and vitreous surgery, orbital reconstruction, eyelid aesthetics, laser treatment for glaucoma, posterior capsule ablation with laser, retinal photocoagulation, intraocular Anti-VEGF injection, fluorescein angiography, OCT, etc.
In particular, the fields of corneal transplantation and posterior segment surgery have achieved many positive results, providing treatment opportunities for dozens of patients. To date, the unit has performed corneal transplants on 41 cases.
Another significant achievement of Dr. Duong Anh Quan is the establishment of the "Central and Central Highlands Corneal Transplant Network," the first of its kind in the country, which has created professional linkages between regional medical facilities, contributing to expanding treatment opportunities for patients.
Alongside treatment, Dr. Duong Anh Quan actively implements free screening and consultation activities, and conducts awareness campaigns on blindness prevention and control. He also collaborates in training students, residents, and postgraduate students, contributing to building a skilled workforce for the ophthalmology specialty.
In scientific research, during the period 2021-2025, he chaired more than 10 projects, including one that won the Hue Imperial City Award for Science and Technology in 2021; and participated in many major specialized conferences both domestically and internationally.
According to Dr. Duong Anh Quan, a specialist in ophthalmology, the combination of theory, practice, and research is crucial for the development of ophthalmology. Currently, the unit is promoting the application of AI in diagnostic support and organizing regular scientific activities to update on advanced treatment trends worldwide.
Dr. Ho Dac Thai Hoang, Chairman of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Hue City, believes that scientists at Hue Central Hospital and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ho Anh Binh and Specialist Doctor II, Dr. Duong Anh Quan, are clear evidence of the role of intellectuals in the development of science and technology linked to practice. These two individuals are also among the six medical scientists in Hue who were recently honored as outstanding intellectuals in science and technology at the 10th Hue City Science and Technology Awards in 2026.
Over the years, many medical scientists have continuously conducted research, directly transforming scientific works into new treatment solutions and techniques, improving the quality of healthcare for the people. Their achievements contribute to affirming the position of Hue medicine and contributing to the development of science and technology in the city.
