Female 'digital engineers' in schools

GD&TĐ - Female educators are not only transmitters of knowledge, but also silent "digital engineers" who create smart, modern, and innovative classrooms.

Despite challenges such as generational gaps, technological skills, and traditional teaching habits, the stories of many female teachers who are pioneers in applying technology show that they are not only transmitters of knowledge, but also silent "digital engineers" creating smart, modern, and innovative classrooms.

Lighting up the "digital classroom"

In the Tho Chau Island Special Zone (An Giang province), applying information technology in schools is not an easy journey. Ms. Ha Thi Oanh, Deputy Principal of Tho Chau Primary and Secondary School, said that most students are children of fishermen, facing difficult economic conditions, and their parents have limited access to technology.

Therefore, when implementing the Khan Academy Vietnam (KAV) open school model, she and her colleagues faced numerous obstacles, ranging from students' unfamiliarity with technology to the difficulties many older teachers encountered in using teaching software.

Above all, Ms. Oanh and the teachers at the school have gradually mastered technology and confidently applied it to teaching. "The best thing is that students have become more interested, learn at their own pace, and receive immediate feedback," Ms. Oanh shared. Difficulties did not discourage the school staff; on the contrary, they further motivated them to persevere in bringing knowledge to students on this remote island.

In addition to implementing the Khan Academy platform in teaching, Tho Chau Primary and Secondary School also organizes many online playgrounds such as VioEdu, Vietnamese Language Champion, etc., to help students become familiar with technology. According to Ms. Oanh, bringing students closer to the digital learning environment not only creates enthusiasm but also helps them become more confident when entering modern educational programs.

“We are not just teachers, but also companions to our students on their journey of discovering knowledge. They are eager to enter this vast world of learning – something they only dared to dream of before,” Ms. Oanh said emotionally. For students encountering technology for the first time, the patience and dedication of the teachers are the “key” to unlocking the door to the world of digital knowledge, helping them become more confident and proactive in their studies and in their own future.

Digital transformation driven by knowledge and passion for the profession.

Passionate about English and information technology, Ms. Vu Ngoc Lan, a teacher at Giao Thien Primary School (Giao Minh, Ninh Binh), excellently won the Special Prize in the 2024 English Electronic Lesson Plan Design Competition. After the competition, Ms. Lan accumulated valuable experience in scripting, designing, and digitizing lesson plans, which she directly applies to her daily teaching work.

Ms. Lan will continue to apply the knowledge and skills she has learned to design e-learning lessons and digital teaching aids for other subjects, helping students have more vivid, proactive, and effective learning experiences. For three consecutive academic years, she has won numerous provincial-level awards: Second Prize in the E-learning Lesson Design Competition in the 2021-2022 academic year; two Second Prizes in the 2022-2023 academic year; and one First Prize and one Third Prize in the Digital Teaching Aid Design Competition in the 2023-2024 academic year.

According to Ms. Lan, innovating teaching methods is an essential requirement in the fundamental and comprehensive reform of the education sector. For her, information technology is not only a tool to support teaching and learning, but also a bridge that helps students get closer to global knowledge. "I am always conscious of the need to improve my knowledge and hone my technological skills to create engaging lessons that help students learn more actively and independently," Ms. Lan confided.

Despite her young age, this teacher from the Northern Delta region has become a shining example of a spirit of learning and creativity. “I aspire to live my passion, to be creative and contribute more to the field of education. My greatest happiness is seeing my students happy, confident, and increasingly mature. In the process of digital transformation, we are not just ‘teaching’ knowledge, but also guiding students into the digital world, spreading the spirit of innovation, creativity, and humanism of teaching in the 4.0 era,” Ms. Lan confided.

In the digital transformation journey of the education sector, the image of female teachers in remote, disadvantaged areas striving to master technology and create new teaching methods is becoming increasingly familiar. The story of Ms. Ly Thi Thanh Vinh, Principal of Duc Ninh Secondary School (Tuyen Quang), is a vivid example of this spirit: a teacher who not only teaches literacy but also acts as a "digital engineer," creating engaging lessons and opening up opportunities for students to access modern knowledge.

In a school in a suburban area, where many students come from disadvantaged families, not a few have to wait until late at night to borrow a phone from their parents who work far away, or share a device with their older siblings. Understanding the students' circumstances, Ms. Vinh and her colleagues proactively arranged for them to use computers in the school's computer lab, directly guiding them through each learning operation in the digital environment.

These efforts quickly yielded positive results. Initially, the students were hesitant and needed close supervision from their teachers. But after just a few weeks, they were able to learn independently, support each other, become more enthusiastic in class, and confidently share their knowledge. Many students even expanded their learning to include mathematics in English, demonstrating a proactive spirit and a desire to excel.

For Ms. Vinh, digital transformation is not only an inevitable trend in education but also a driving force for teachers to reinvent themselves. "If we don't innovate, we will fall behind. Students today have many learning opportunities, so teachers must strive even harder to become companions and guides, not just transmitters of information," she shared.

The teaching staff at Duc Ninh Secondary School regularly organizes professional development sessions and exchanges experiences through online groups, working together to find solutions to improve teaching effectiveness. These training sessions and sharing sessions help teachers become more confident in applying technology, while also broadening their thinking about the role of teachers in the digital age.

Looking ahead, Ms. Ly Thi Thanh Vinh believes that the digital transformation journey in education is not just a story of technology, but a journey of knowledge, perseverance, and the dedication of teachers. Each innovative lesson, each more confident student, is the "sweet fruit" of those persistent efforts. And in the outskirts of Tuyen Quang, these "digital engineers" on the podium are daily contributing to illuminating the future for their students with their love for the profession and their desire for innovation.
