While senior athletes like Hoang Xuan Vinh and Tran Quoc Cuong have retired to become coaches, 34-year-old shooter Ngo Huu Vuong continues his relentless pursuit of his fourth consecutive ASIAD. His exceptional efforts were deservedly rewarded with the first silver medal for himself and for Vietnamese sports at ASIAD 19.
Ngo Huu Vuong changed the color of his medal at ASIAD 19.
With consistent performance, Ngo Huu Vuong brought joy to fans by winning the silver medal in the 10m air rifle moving target event, losing to gold medalist Dwi Putra (Indonesia) by 7 points and finishing ahead of strong competitors from South Korea and North Korea. Ngo Huu Vuong said that after winning only bronze medals in two previous Asian Games, he was very happy and proud to have achieved such an outstanding result. "I have continuously strived in daily training, trying to accumulate experience whenever I had the opportunity to compete, so I am very happy with the result I achieved. This excellent achievement is a great motivation for me and my teammates to compete in the mixed men's and women's air rifle event on September 26th," Ngo Huu Vuong shared.
It's a little disappointing that Huu Vuong and his teammates Cong Dau and Tuan Anh missed out on a medal in the team event, finishing fourth and just one point behind the gold medalist, South Korea. "It's hard to describe our disappointment. We tried our best, but we still lacked a bit of luck," Huu Vuong shared. Hopefully, this "little bit of luck" will accompany him and his teammates in today's competition (September 26th) to help the Vietnamese sports delegation successfully win their first gold medal at ASIAD 19.
In taekwondo, it was quite disappointing when former Asian champion in the women's 49kg sparring category, Truong Thi Kim Tuyen, after defeating the Timor Leste fighter 2-1 in the round of 16, suffered a painful 0-2 defeat against Mannopova of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals. Similarly, facing a formidable opponent in the host country China's taekwondo team, Bac Thi Khiem, Pham Ngoc Cham, Ly Hong Phuc, and Pham Minh Bao Kha lost 18-88 in the semi-finals of the mixed team sparring event, thus only winning a bronze medal. In fencing, Vietnam's number one fencer, Vu Thanh An, was eliminated in the knockout round of the sabre event due to a recurrence of his knee injury.
AWAITING THE MIRACLE OF THE WHALE FISH BY NGUYEN HUY HOANG
The highlight of the third day of competition (September 26) for the Vietnamese sports delegation at ASIAD 19 was swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang's performance in the 1500m freestyle final. Having won a silver medal at ASIAD 18 in 2018, Huy Hoang is expected to make a breakthrough this time. Besides Huy Hoang, the Vietnamese swimming team also includes Tran Hung Nguyen and Nguyen Quang Thuan competing in the 400m individual medley. In esports, the Vietnamese team will compete for the bronze medal against Thailand in the combined team event. In fencing, Nguyen Tien Nhat and Nguyen Phuoc Den will compete in the foil event. In tennis, Ly Hoang Nam will compete for a place in the men's singles quarterfinals against Hong Seong-chan (South Korea). In chess, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Le Tuan Minh (men); Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Vo Thi Kim Phung (women) will compete in crucial games 5, 6, and 7 of the individual rapid chess event.
