The final days of this year are drawing to a close with a series of films of mixed quality. Hollywood boasts a plethora of worthwhile films, but there are also many bad ones. As usual, Variety has compiled two lists of the worst films of 2023, and many of the names on them are not surprising.
Asteroid City , a Palme d'Or contender, is included in the list of worst films of 2023.
Owen Gleiberman's list of the first five films includes: Ghosted (directed by Dexter Fletcher), Asteroid City (directed by Wes Anderson), Your Place or Mine (directed by Aline Brosh McKenna), Magic Mike's Last Dance (directed by Steven Soderbergh), and Heart of Stone (directed by Tom Harper).
Among these films, Asteroid City competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and received positive reviews from both audiences and film critics. It's not surprising that Heart of Stone and Ghosted are included in the list, as these films don't truly captivate audiences with their quality, despite having decent visuals and a cast of A-list Hollywood stars.
The Flash movie was a superhero flop this year.
Peter Debruge's remaining list still features "deserved" films and some surprising inclusions. The list includes Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (director: Rhys Frake Waterfield), Carmen (director: Benjamin Millepied), Paint (director: Brit McAdams), Caligula: The Ultimate Cut (director: Tinto Brass), and The Flash (director: Andy Muschietti).
Overall, The Flash It's not the worst movie of 2023; in fact, it could be considered quite entertaining, except for a few elements, such as the special effects, which aren't really that good. Compared to other superhero movies like The Marvels or Ant-Man 3 , The Flash isn't necessarily worse in terms of quality.
The horror film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey has been heavily criticized for its cinematic quality.
For the remaining films on Peter Debruge's list, the choices are hardly surprising, such as Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey , a slasher horror film inspired by the adorable Winnie the Pooh character created by EH Shepard. Numerous critics have rated this film as so bad that it's... unacceptable, offering no cinematic value whatsoever.
