Kind hearts

A group of young people, with only 7 members, has persistently and tirelessly brought love, warmth, and shared difficulties, helping poor children and ethnic minorities in the mountainous regions of Lao Cai . This is the volunteer group called "Green Charity".

The "Green Volunteers" group was established in September 2016, led by Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Giang. Over the past seven years, Ms. Giang and the members have carried out nearly 30 charitable programs according to their annual plan, as well as some programs based on emerging events and incidents.

Speaking about the group's activities, Ms. Kieu Giang shared: "As society develops, people's lives are also changing towards modernization. But for people in mountainous areas and ethnic minority regions, life is still very difficult. Besides the attention and investment of the Party and the State, there is still a need for benefactors to help and share their difficulties. With 'Green Volunteers,' love is about giving, sharing, and bringing 'seeds of hope' to those in need and vulnerable through practical and meaningful actions."

Sharing the same vision and goals, the seven young people in the group, undeterred by long distances, freezing winters, or scorching summers, consistently maintain charitable programs and activities aimed at helping those in need in the mountainous regions of Muong Khuong, Bac Ha, and Si Ma Cai.

“We all work for state agencies and units, so arranging our time and work schedules to carry out charitable programs, especially large-scale ones in mountainous areas, is not easy. The motivation for us to do this is probably the expectant eyes, happy smiles, sometimes tears of emotion, and the unspoken handshakes of the people. Like the members of my group, I do good deeds not to expect thanks, but from the heart, from the compassion between people,” shared Nguyen Duy Ha Ly, a member of the “Green Volunteer” group.

For over seven years, thousands of warm jackets, blankets, mattresses, notebooks, school bags, pens, boots, sandals, boxes of instant noodles, and hundreds of kilograms of rice have been delivered directly to poor people, children, and students in many mountainous areas of Lao Cai province. The group has sponsored one disadvantaged student in Thao Chu Phin commune (Si Ma Cai district) for three years, providing 3 million VND per year for school supplies, clothes, books, and notebooks.

The group's activities rely not only on mobilizing community support through social media, but also on contributions from members and securing funding from programs and projects of various organizations. The "Lighting Up the Border Region" project, which installed 90 solar-powered lights in Lu Di San village, San Chai commune, and Dao Dan San village, Nan San commune, Si Ma Cai district in June 2021, is one such project that received funding. This project involved numerous implementation steps and rigorous review processes before receiving financial support from the European Union (EU), totaling over 224 million VND (30% of which was contributed by the local government, the "Green Volunteer" group, the Si Ma Cai Border Guard Post, and several benefactors).

"The group's goal is to have streetlights and electricity in residential areas to make it convenient for people to travel, live collectively, and patrol the border. Through this, we hope that people will change their perception about using renewable energy efficiently and effectively," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Giang.

As a resident of Lu Di San village, Mrs. Giang Thi Ve happily said: "Since the village was equipped with solar-powered lights, people can easily fetch water for their fields, whether late at night or early in the morning, and children have a playground in the evenings. We will take good care of the project so that it can be used for a long time."

The nearly 1.5 billion VND that the "Green Volunteers" group has raised over the past 7 years may not be a huge sum, but it represents the wholehearted dedication to the community of young people in this new era. These warm hearts have contributed to beautifying the qualities and age-old moral traditions of the Vietnamese people: the spirit of "mutual support" and "helping those in need."
