“Napalm Girl” is one of the most iconic and memorable news photos of all time. The photo was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism in 1973. In the 20th century, Napalm Girl became a powerful symbol of the anti-war movement around the world .
On May 16, World Press Photo announced the results of its own investigation and suspended the recognition of photographer Nick Ut (Huynh Cong Ut) as the author of the photo Napalm Girl. The decision was related to information provided by the film The Stringer released earlier this year. According to The Stringer, the person who actually took the photo Napalm Girl was a driver named Nguyen Thanh Nghe.
Photographer Nick Ut and Ms. Kim Phuc, the little girl in the photo “Napalm Girl”, who later became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace .
Responding to Tien Phong about the decision of the World Press Photo Awards, photographer Nick Ut said his lawyer is preparing documents to sue the film crew of The Stringer.
"Many people support me and oppose the World Press Photo Awards. I have friends from all over the world who encourage me. I don't need an award from the World Press Photo Awards. For me, the Pulitzer Prize is important," said Nick Ut.
He also shared that the organization's decision to temporarily suspend recognition of the author of the Napalm Girl photo stemmed from a personal matter between him and Gary Knight - the producer and lead actor in The Stringer.
In many interviews with domestic and foreign media, photographer Nick Ut said he took the famous photo at the age of 21, outside Trang Bang village ( Tay Ninh ) on June 8, 1972. After taking the photo, he rushed to save Kim Phuc - the girl in the photo - who suffered third-degree burns on about 30% of her body due to the heat emitted from a napalm bomb.
The little girl Kim Phuc in the photo later became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace. The Kim Phuc International Charity Fund was also established to help children who are victims of war and poor children around the world.
