The "Napalm Girl" is one of the most iconic and impactful news photographs of all time. It won the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism in 1973. Throughout the 20th century, the Napalm Girl became a powerful symbol of the anti-war movement worldwide .
On May 16th, World Press Photo announced the results of its own investigation and suspended the recognition of photographer Nick Ut (Huynh Cong Ut) as the author of the Napalm Girl photograph. The decision relates to information provided by the film The Stringer, released earlier this year. According to The Stringer, the person who actually took the Napalm Girl photograph was a driver named Nguyen Thanh Nghe.
Photographer Nick Ut and Kim Phuc, the little girl in the "Napalm Girl" photograph, who later became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace.
Responding to Tien Phong newspaper regarding the World Press Photo Award's decision, photographer Nick Ut said his lawyer is preparing documents to sue the film crew of The Stringer.
"Many people supported me and opposed the World Press Photo Awards. I received encouragement from friends all over the world. I don't need an award from the World Press Photo Awards. For me, the Pulitzer Prize is what matters," said Nick Ut.
He also shared that the organization's decision to temporarily suspend recognition of the Napalm Girl photograph stemmed from a personal issue between him and Gary Knight, the producer and lead actor in The Stringer.
In numerous interviews with domestic and international media, photographer Nick Ut revealed that he took the famous photograph at the age of 21, outside Trang Bang village ( Tay Ninh province) on June 8, 1972. After taking the photo, he rushed to save Kim Phuc – the girl in the picture – who had suffered third-degree burns to about 30% of her body due to the heat from a napalm bomb.
The little girl Kim Phúc in the photograph later became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace. The Kim Phúc International Charity Foundation was also established to help children who are victims of war and impoverished children around the world.
