Woltemade's hopes are dashed by Newcastle's declining form. |
Woltemade was brought to Newcastle with the expectation of replacing Alexander Isak and quickly made an impact. The German striker scored on his debut against Wolves and had 4 goals in his first 5 Premier League games, including a goal against Arsenal.
However, his form has declined over time. In the Premier League, Woltermade has gone goalless since the 0-1 defeat to Manchester United on December 26, 2025. Across all competitions, his last goal came in the FA Cup victory against Aston Villa on February 14, two months ago.
One of the main reasons stems from a change in his role. From playing as a center forward, Woltemade was frequently moved to play as an attacking midfielder in many matches. This adjustment significantly affected his goal-scoring ability.
Tensions flared after the 1-2 defeat to Crystal Palace on April 11th, when Wolverhampton Wanderers were only brought on for the final six minutes. Manager Howe's personnel decisions were puzzling, especially since Newcastle needed a goal to equalize. Howe later insisted he based his team selection on training performances, not transfer values.
Wolverhampton Wanderers himself denied a drop in form, claiming his playing position was the main reason. Meanwhile, Germany's national team coach Julian Nagelsmann publicly supported the striker, while also hinting that Newcastle's player selection was inappropriate.
Currently, Newcastle are 14th with 42 points, 10 points behind the Champions League qualification spots with only 6 rounds remaining in the season.
If they fail to qualify for European competition next season, the risk of a mass exodus of players is real. In that case, Woltermade is likely to be one of the names to leave in order to salvage his career.
