The joy of new homes

To date, thousands of temporary and dilapidated houses in localities throughout the province have been "eliminated," replaced by new, spacious, and sturdy homes – "products" created from the loving hearts and sharing of benevolent organizations and individuals in society. The joy of having a stable home has given many disadvantaged families the motivation to strive for a better life.

The joy of new homes

We were welcomed by Ms. Ho Thi A Lum (born in 1960) from Block 6, Khe Sanh town, Huong Hoa district, into her newly completed house, which was put into use on June 11, 2025. In the past few days, Ms. Lum couldn't hide her joy, because she had never felt so safe living in such a sturdy house before.

Mrs. Lum recounted: “My husband passed away prematurely due to a serious illness, leaving behind six young children, so my family faced many difficulties. The pain continued to haunt me when my first and second children also died due to accidents and illnesses. I raised four children alone, one of whom is frequently ill. For many years, my children and I lived in a dilapidated makeshift house; whenever it rained, water would flood the house, and in the dry season, it was stuffy and uncomfortable.”

After years of hard work and dedication, Mrs. Lum's health gradually deteriorated. She and her children were constantly worried, having to seek temporary shelter at a neighbor's house during the rainy season for fear of their house collapsing. Therefore, when she received the news that she would receive 70 million VND in support to build a new house, she was overjoyed. On February 3rd, 2025, construction officially began on her dream home.

Now, living in her new, sturdy, and safe home, Mrs. Lum sleeps soundly. No longer worried about housing, her health and spirits have improved significantly. Every day she harvests tea, coffee, and vegetables from her garden to sell at the market. This is also the motivation for her to look forward to a new life with many new joys.

At 81 years old, Mr. Ho Van Hong, residing in Dong Dong village, Mo O commune, Dakrong district, is equally happy as he prepares to move into his new home. Although the house hasn't been officially handed over yet, these days he and his children are busy cleaning the floors until they shine, arranging furniture, and hanging pictures of President Ho Chi Minh and his medals in the most prominent positions.

As a war invalid, Mr. Hong is no longer able to work like a normal person. Besides his monthly government allowance, his only source of income comes from farming, making life difficult for his family. Their old stilt house is now in serious disrepair.

In early 2025, Mr. Hong received 100 million VND in support to build a sturdy house nearly 80 square meters in size. While tidying up the picture of President Ho Chi Minh hanging in the most prominent place in his house, Mr. Hong said: "Even in my dreams, I never thought I would have such a spacious and sturdy new house. Thank you to the Party, the State, and the local government for their care and for helping me fulfill my greatest wish in my twilight years."

These newly renovated houses are like "keys" that unlock many good things for the people. Ms. Nguyen Thi No, from Le Mon village, Phong Binh commune, Gio Linh district, had her house constructed by the Military Industry and Telecommunications Group and Gio Linh district as part of the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, starting on February 18, 2025.

Ms. Nở shared: “My family is classified as a poor household and faced difficulties with housing. Thanks to the support from the Military Industry and Telecommunications Group, Gio Linh district, and our neighbors, my dream of a sturdy house has become a reality. This is a motivation for my family to focus on our work, develop our economy , continue to improve our lives, and make more contributions to building our homeland.”

The joy of owning new homes is spreading from remote border regions, mountainous areas to the plains and coastal areas. The long-held dreams of many poor people have become a reality. Following the officials of Huong Hiep commune, Dakrong district, our reporter visited the newly built house of Mr. Ho Ta Ca (born in 1952) in Phu An village. Mr. Ta Ca's long-held wish for a sturdy house to shelter him from rain and storms has now come true.

These days, his house is always filled with joy and laughter from neighbors who come to congratulate him. Mr. Hong's family is in difficult circumstances; his children have all started their own families, so only he and his wife live in the stilt house built in 1990, which is now in serious disrepair.

After being reviewed and included in the list of households eligible for housing assistance by the local authorities, Mr. and Mrs. Ta Ca now have a sturdy 42-square-meter house. "My wife and I are old and frail, but we are fortunate to have received support from the Party and the State to build a new house. From now on, I can rest assured knowing I have a place to live until the end of my life," Mr. Ta Ca shared.

Huong Hiep commune is the locality that has received the most support in eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses in Dakrong district, with 267 houses, including 70 houses built by households themselves, 109 houses supported by the Ministry of Public Security , and 88 houses supported by the BIDV Trade Union. In implementing the emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses nationwide" launched by the Prime Minister, the Party Committee and government of Huong Hiep commune have focused on leading, directing, and organizing the comprehensive implementation of the program.

Besides focusing on directing, managing, and setting directions and solutions from the outset, the commune has intensified widespread propaganda about the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses to all segments of the population; and encouraged families to contribute additional funds to build spacious, sturdy houses that meet the "three solid" standards.

Ho Chi Cuong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of Huong Hiep commune, said that in implementing the directive from higher authorities on eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses in the area, the locality has made efforts to implement the program with the hope that people will soon have decent housing. "We believe that eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses is not only an important political task but also a responsibility and a matter of concern for the Party committee and the government to help people settle down," Mr. Cuong affirmed.
