Watermelon is a key and characteristic crop of the Nga Son region. For generations, watermelon cultivation has not only been closely associated with but has also contributed to stabilizing the lives of the local people.

Every year, local people maintain specialized watermelon cultivation areas in the villages of Nga Trung 4, Long Khang, Yen Ninh, etc. According to statistics, in the first 5 months of 2026, the entire commune developed 24 hectares of watermelon with main varieties such as: Nong Viet 18, Thien Vu, and Hac My Nhan.

Specifically, the People's Committee of the commune provided all the seeds and plastic sheeting for covering 10.4 hectares of watermelons in Nga Trung 4 village to encourage people to develop production according to VietGAP standards, contributing to increasing the economic value and building a brand for watermelons in Mai An Tiem.

According to locals, this year's weather, with plenty of sunshine and little rain, is ideal for stable watermelon growth, resulting in high yields of sweet, juicy, fragrant watermelons that ripen evenly. Thanks to proper technical care, the first crop of watermelons here has an average weight of 3-5 kg per fruit, with some weighing nearly 7 kg.

In recent days, a bustling atmosphere has permeated the local watermelon fields as farmers have been busy harvesting and traders have come directly to the fields to buy the produce.

The watermelon harvest season coincides with summer, when the weather is hot and sunny, and market demand is high. As a result, early-season watermelons are being purchased by traders at prices ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 VND/kg depending on the variety, which is 20% higher than in previous years.

Average revenue reaches 160-180 million VND/ha, with a profit of approximately 70-80 million VND/ha.

To enhance the production value of watermelons, watermelon growers in Nga Son commune have applied scientific and technical measures to production, ensuring yield and quality; expanding the area of watermelon production according to VietGAP standards. At the same time, they are developing watermelon cultivation along the value chain to ensure quality, standards, and build a sustainable Nga Son watermelon brand.
