The European Commission (EC) said on March 27 that it was preparing to respond to new US import tariffs, after Washington said the EU should not expect any progress in trade negotiations.

Specifically, EC spokesman Olof Gill stated: "The EU has announced retaliatory tariffs on cars. Next week, we understand that a series of new measures from the US, what they call reciprocal tariffs, will come into effect. We are very sorry about this tax, however, we are preparing for everything."

The EC spokesman stressed that he could not guarantee the exact timing of Brussels’ potential response, but that it would be timely, robust, well-considered and have the intended impact.

Also on March 27, EU diplomats confirmed that the 27-member bloc had tried to launch negotiations to prevent additional tariffs.

However, Washington has said no talks will take place until the world's largest economy imposes more tariffs.

Several unnamed EU officials said the bloc's retaliatory tariffs could be as high as 25%, but the exact level has yet to be determined.

Currently, the US is looking to promote five domestic manufacturing sectors, including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, wood, semiconductors and metals.
