At least 90 people were killed in a particularly severe gas explosion at a coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China, on the evening of May 22.
This is considered one of the country's most serious mining disasters in recent years.
The accident occurred at a coal mine in Tam Nguyen district, stemming from a gas explosion underground while a total of 247 workers were working beneath the surface.
Previously, the concentration of toxic carbon monoxide in the area was found to have exceeded safe levels.
Initially, local authorities reported 8 deaths and dozens of people trapped. However, by noon on May 23, the death toll had risen to 90, while 9 workers remained missing and were being urgently searched for by rescue teams.
Over 700 rescue and medical personnel have been mobilized to the scene. In addition, 123 people have been taken to hospital for treatment.
