France proposes a three-year immigration freeze.

On May 24, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin proposed a three-year moratorium on legal immigration to the country, citing that the nation's capacity to receive and integrate immigrants has reached its limit.

In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, Darmanin stated: “We have reached the limit in our ability to integrate and assimilate immigrants. Therefore, I believe we need to end the current immigration model. That is why I propose implementing a three-year suspension of legal immigration. This issue needs to be decided in the next presidential election.”

According to the French Justice Minister, the government also needs to consider amending the constitution to tighten immigration controls, while supporting a referendum on immigration policy.

Mr. Darmanin suggested considering abolishing the mechanism that allows immigrants to sponsor relatives to come to France. He also emphasized that those who have already been ordered to deport should be removed from French territory as soon as possible, while integration measures should be strengthened for those who have been granted French citizenship.

Earlier in January, a survey conducted by research firm CSA showed that around 70% of French people supported completely halting the flow of migrants into the country within 2-3 years.
