TP - The new format of the high school graduation exam and numerous adjustments in university admission regulations are challenges facing the first cohort of students who will complete the 2018 general education program in 2025. These difficulties require support and guidance from high schools.
Proactive adaptation
Regarding the first cohort of students studying the new curriculum and preparing for the 2025 high school graduation exam, Ms. Thanh Tuyet, a teacher in Nam Dinh, said that the difficulties are multifaceted, as the students are accustomed to learning and assessment methods based on the "test what you learn" approach. Teachers themselves also have to significantly change their teaching methods and knowledge delivery to suit the new curriculum.
The Dak Glong District Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities ( Dak Nong Province) plans to start preparing students for the high school graduation exam earlier than usual. Accordingly, from October 1st, the school will implement a format combining regular classes with extra lessons for the exam subjects for 12th-grade students to ensure they master the knowledge, proactively manage their learning, and develop their own study plans.
To understand the needs, aspirations, and abilities of students, the school conducts surveys and provides subject selection counseling to help them choose subjects that match their abilities, strengths, and career aspirations. The school also provides counseling on developing study plans and requires teachers to create a question bank to support and prepare students for exams that closely match the requirements of the test.

To support students, Nghe An Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities has implemented a curriculum based on subject combinations throughout grades 10 to 12, taking into account students' university entrance exam preferences and academic abilities.
In addition to the two compulsory subjects, Mathematics and Literature, the school advises students to register for the remaining elective subjects in the high school graduation exam to match their intended majors and universities. This allows students to have early direction and develop appropriate study plans.
In addition to organizing review sessions for the high school graduation exam based on subject combinations, the school has also established a career counseling board to guide students in understanding university admissions information, preparing for the SAT, and assessing their abilities. The school has also developed a plan to organize 4 to 5 mock high school graduation exams to help students familiarize themselves with the exam format and reduce psychological pressure.
Guidance for students
Ms. Tran Thi Hai Yen, Principal of Tran Phu High School, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, said that in 2023, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training conducted a new exam format for students.
The difficulties have been identified and schools have made plans to overcome them, so students can rest assured about their studies in the 2024-2025 school year. English is a newer subject, so there were initial difficulties, but it is now being implemented smoothly.
The Hanoi People's Committee has just issued a directive on strengthening the direction, coordination, and organization of the 2025 high school graduation exam and university and vocational education entrance exams in the city.
Accordingly, the Hanoi People's Committee requested the Department of Education and Training to direct, guide, and inspect the reform of teaching and learning methods, organization of review activities, and assessment for students; ensuring that all necessary elements are in place to serve the exam, preventing students, teachers, and general education institutions from being passive or facing difficulties when participating in and organizing the exam.
Regarding university admissions, Ms. Yen said that the school proactively guides students right from the beginning of the academic year.
This involves focusing on a combined admissions method that considers high school graduation exam scores or academic transcripts along with results from aptitude tests, critical thinking tests, or foreign language certificates, including international competency assessment certificates (SAT/ACT). This is a strength of students from Tran Phu High School as well as students from more privileged areas.
Therefore, students must invest time in studying the subjects they plan to choose for the high school graduation exam in order to achieve the desired results for university admission.
"We proactively gather information about universities that our students have traditionally applied to in order to guide and advise them," Ms. Yen said.
At Cao Loc District Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Lang Son province), the school's management board has instructed subject departments to focus on developing and providing students with sample exam questions based on the new format of the 2018 General Education Program. Simultaneously, the school organizes career counseling sessions to help students understand different professions and make informed decisions about their future academic choices.
The school also collaborates with parents to monitor, provide psychological counseling, and support students during their studies and exam preparation; helping candidates prepare as best as possible for the exams, avoiding confusion as this is the first time a cohort has participated in an exam with a new format.
