Nokia sets new record for 5G mmWave download speeds

According to Devdiscourse , the milestone was achieved at the OuluZone test facility in Oulu, Finland, using Nokia's advanced 5G mmWave extended coverage solution. This is the fastest download speed recorded worldwide to date, demonstrating the reach and connection speeds that 5G mmWave can deliver. It builds on the previous world record set by Nokia in 2021.

“We have just set a new speed record for 5G mmWave extended coverage. This demonstrates that mmWave solutions will be an essential building block for operators to efficiently deliver multi-gigabit 5G broadband coverage to their customers in urban, suburban and rural areas,” said Ari Kynäslahti, Head of Strategy and Technology at Nokia Mobile Networks, in a statement. This also complements the Sub-6 GHz spectrum assets.

The trial leveraged Nokia’s AirScale baseband and 24 GHz AirScale mmWave radio (n258 band) combined with a Nokia FastMile 5G PoC CPE (customer premises equipment). Using 8 component carriers (8CC) in the downlink, aggregating 800 MHz mmWave spectrum, Nokia achieved an impressive peak download speed of 2.1 Gbps and upload speed of 57.2 Mbps.

Nokia’s mmWave radio portfolio includes compact, high-power and mid-power solutions. This gives the company the flexibility to ensure seamless service continuity across different environments, enabling networks to meet diverse customer needs.

The FastMile 5G PoC device used in these groundbreaking trials is currently being tested with major operators worldwide, Nokia said in a press release. Its superior performance over long distances is supported by a 360° antenna (27 dBi) that dynamically adapts to changing conditions, overcoming the challenges associated with mmWave deployments.
