Production conversion
For many years, the people of Binh Hoa hamlet, Chau Phu commune are no longer unfamiliar with the name Dinh Xuan Huy. Mr. Huy has been recognized for many years as a good farmer and businessman in the commune, actively participating in patriotic emulation movements in the locality. The results he has achieved all come from his determination to transform production on his own fields.

Previously, Mr. Huy only grew rice on 1 hectare of his family's land, earning 30-50 million VND from 3 rice crops/year, just enough to cover daily living expenses. With the support of the local government, he switched to a model of growing fruit trees combined with rice, increasing the application of science and technology in production. "Up to now, from growing rice and fruit trees, I earn 70-80 million VND/year. My family's economy is more stable," Mr. Huy shared.
With the results achieved, Mr. Huy believes that his own progress and determination, the encouragement and suggestions of the Commune Farmers' Association and the local government helped him boldly change production and reduce dependence on rice. When life improved, Mr. Huy actively participated in patriotic emulation movements and social security in the locality. He mobilized people in Binh Hoa hamlet to contribute more than 300 million VND to build roads, bridges, and spread stones to prevent mud on the internal roads...
According to Mr. Huy, farmers need to change production to keep up with the development of society. The rice market often fluctuates, the weather is unpredictable, so farmers face many difficulties in production. “When the rice is ready to harvest, we worry about a good harvest, low prices and vice versa. Therefore, I decided to switch to cultivating fruit orchards in parallel with rice cultivation to have a better income. In the long term, I encourage farmers to change production, participate in the collective economy, and link with businesses to have a more stable output to improve their lives,” Mr. Huy said.
Livestock linkage
Having been developed for many years, the profession of raising snakehead fish in My Qui hamlet, Vinh Thanh Trung commune has been approached by many farmers. However, because farmers mainly raise spontaneously and have limited techniques, productivity is not high. The unstable purchasing market makes farmers worried. Understanding the concerns of farmers, the Vinh Thanh Trung Commune Farmers' Association and the My Qui hamlet leadership actively mobilize, guide and support farmers to participate in establishing the My Qui hamlet snakehead fish breeding cooperative.
According to Mr. Nguyen Trung An - Head of My Qui Hamlet, the cooperative has 12 members with a total cultivated area of 7.5 hectares. The Farmers' Association of Vinh Thanh Trung Commune and the professional sector organized training courses to improve fish farming techniques for members, thereby helping the cooperative activities become more organized, helping members feel confident when participating in collective business. Mr. Nguyen Van Dang - a member of the My Qui Hamlet Snakehead Fish Breeding Cooperative said: "We are associated with a number of snakehead fish breeding cooperatives in Can Tho City and Vinh Long to provide them with quality fish fry. Each fish stocking session brings in a profit of about 10 - 15 million VND, improving family life."
Currently, some farmers in My Qui hamlet plan to expand the area of snakehead fish breeding, join cooperatives to feel more secure about output and increase profits. Many farmers hope that the farmers' association and the agricultural sector will support snakehead fish breeders in My Qui hamlet to connect with cooperatives and cooperatives for commercial snakehead fish farming in and outside the province to have stable output.
Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Vinh Thanh Trung Commune, Nguyen Quoc Thong, said: “We regularly care for and support members of the My Qui Hamlet Snakehead Fish Breeding Cooperative to develop production and expand output to improve their lives. When farmers’ lives improve, they will actively contribute to the development of their homeland.”
