Ha Tinh farmers are excited to go to the fields to harvest summer-autumn rice.

Taking advantage of favorable weather, farmers in Ha Tinh province are simultaneously harvesting their summer-autumn rice crop. The atmosphere of the harvest season and the Independence Day celebrations seems to be more vibrant and joyful throughout the countryside.

From early morning, farmers in Thach Ha district temporarily set aside their holiday and headed to the fields. Throughout communes such as Tuong Son, Thach Tri, Thach Van, Thach Hoi, etc., the sound of combine harvesters echoed from early morning until late at night.

Ms. Tran Thi Hanh (Bac Binh village, Tuong Son commune, Thach Ha district) said: “Following the weather forecast, taking advantage of the sunny days during the holiday, we all went down to the fields to harvest rice. In this season, 'every day early is a blessing.' The farmers mainly grow the Khang Dan 18 variety to sell to businesses that make vermicelli and cakes. My family has 2 acres, and the expected yield is 2.5 quintals per sao (approximately 250 kg per 1000 square meters). That would be a success for the summer-autumn crop.”

Lộc Hà planted its crops later, so not much has been harvested yet. This summer-autumn crop season is happening so fast that farmers aren't thinking about holidays; they're even eating right in the fields to keep up with the schedule.

Many localities have proactively reviewed the number of combine harvesters in their areas and planned for rational coordination to ensure the fastest possible harvesting of the summer-autumn rice crop.

In Can Loc district, the bustling atmosphere of harvest season is evident everywhere. After a whole season of hard work, people eagerly await the day the rice ripens in the fields. They mobilize manpower and arrange machinery to quickly harvest the ripe rice.

According to Phan Cao Ky, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Can Loc district: In the 2023 summer-autumn crop season, the district planted rice on nearly 9,000 hectares, of which more than 3,200 hectares were in concentrated production; using key varieties such as: Nep 98, Ha Phat 3, Bac Thinh, Huong Binh… The area harvested continuously increased rapidly in the first day of September thanks to the uniform and concentrated variety structure and favorable weather conditions.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuong (Luong Hoi village, Khanh Vinh Yen commune, Can Loc district) said: “This production area is undergoing transformation, so in the summer-autumn crop, farmers mainly grow Glutinous Rice 98, which is easy to care for and harvest. The machines are running busily, and the harvest is finished quickly. We just hope for a few more sunny days so that the farmers can dry their rice properly.”

Currently, more than 150 combine harvesters are operating day and night; the communes of Vuong Loc, Khanh Vinh Yen, Tung Loc, Dong Loc, etc., are leading in terms of harvested area. The average yield for the entire district is expected to reach 53.48 quintals/hectare (in the 2022 summer-autumn crop, the average rice yield for the entire district was 53.31 quintals/hectare).

Traders have also begun mobilizing manpower and transport vehicles to purchase rice from farmers in Can Loc district. Farmers are hoping for high rice prices because the rice export situation is showing positive signs.

Thanks to the cultivation of short-duration rice varieties and simultaneous planting, the flood-prone rice fields of Duc Tho district have been quickly harvested with the motto "better to harvest while still green than wait until it's overripe." According to local farmers, with the current sunny weather, the harvest of this rice crop will be completed in just a few days, ensuring safety before the rainy season.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Ha, Head of the Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), said: "The Provincial People's Committee has just signed and issued a directive on focusing on the quick and efficient harvesting of the 2023 summer-autumn rice crop. Accordingly, from August 31st to September 4th, the weather will be changeable, with little rain, sunny days, and relatively high daytime temperatures, making it favorable for the quick and efficient harvesting of the summer-autumn rice crop, avoiding natural disasters."

Therefore, localities need to implement the principle of "better to harvest early than late," harvesting rice as soon as it ripens, striving to complete the harvest before September 15th.
